How long do the key fob batteries last?

I have had my 2020 Ram 2500 for just over a year now. I replaced the ke fob battery on my key not long after I got it.

Lately my truck has been saying touch fob to start button to start. Typically once it happens it will do that once in a day and then work normally the rest of the day. However, today at lunch it asked again.

How long do key fob batteries last?

Is a year typical battery life?

With my 2019 1500 that I have had for 5 years, I have never had to replace my fob battery. With my 2022 2500, this is the same.

You may want the dealer to look at it. I am wondering if there is an issue with the RF hub recognizing the FOB - or maybe an issue the FOB itself perhaps. Does it do that with both FOBs?

I had to replace mine way too soon also. Turns out that I kept my FOB close enough to the truck that they were constantly communicating. The truck was waking up every many, many times per day. A few others here have seen this behavior, but not most. Once when I had not driven the truck for a few weeks, the constant waking up had drawn down the truck batteries enough so that it would not start. I am always very hesitant to use our local dealer for anything unless I have to. I bought Faraday pouches on Amazon and that solved the waking up problem. As a bonus, the FOBs now think the truck is out of range or something and their batteries have been fine since.

How close? My truck sits outside the bedroom window where I also keep the FOB, maybe 25 feet...never experienced that with any of my Rams!

I just replaced the battery in my remotes (one was reporting "hold close") just yesterday.

That said, the keys *should* be far enough away they're not communicating and it's not a daily driver.

I wish my old Audio could go more than a few months (at most) without needing a battery....

These FOBs and the truck have a pretty good distance. Mine was in the house about 75 feet away from the stall where the truck is parked. Close enough to unlock the doors so close enough to communicate back and forth I guess.

Mine fobs are both stored about 22’ from the truck.

The last two trips it worked fine.

It has been apparent in another thread that not all of these trucks have the constantly waking up issue like mine does. The only reason I figured out what was happening with mine was that I do not drive the truck that often and once after a long time parked, the truck batteries were low. Now I use a battery tender which works well. I had noticed the truck EVIC waking up at strange times for no apparent reason at night. (I could see the glow come on in the cab from our front porch.) The battery tender avoids the truck batteries from draining down during long stretches of non-use, but it does not change the waking up behavior. Keeping the FOBs in a Faraday stops the issue. I just did not want the truck constantly waking up. If it did not do that, I probably would not use the Faraday and would just replace the FOB batteries whenever they started acting up.

I keep my key fob closed up in a small faraday bag in my dresser when I'm home. That'll stop any chatter between the two. Both the truck and I get a good nights sleep.
