Unhooking fiver trailer w/ air ride susp.

So here's one I've not seen anyone talk about. Maybe because I'm the only one who has the problem and believe me, that would not be a first. On my last truck, ( which had a slider hitch), when I pulled in to a campground with my fiver, I'd drop the landing legs and lift it up just until the pin box just barely lifted off of hitch head, unlock and pull away. My new truck has air ride suspension and with the new hitch not being a slider and spinning in unison with pin box. I obviously don't want any metal to metal grinding so i put one of those neoprene discs on the king pin. Here's my problem. I went to unhook for the first time and literally could not tell how high to lift my fiver off of hitch head. I actually started lifting up the back of the truck. So between the air ride adjusting and that neoprene disc taking up that little buffer space, you can't tell when pin box is just barely above head to disconnect. I'm looking for some advice or a trick to make life easier. How is everybody else uncoupling with air ride susp., and neo disc plate. Or is it just me being dar har.

Not sure, but I think if you put it in "jack mode" the air suspension will stop adjusting.

Well what I've learned is that the air ride automatically does it's thing when the vehicle is hooked up to RV but if you hit the button again, it will turn it off. I've not had a chance to check out my hypothesis when un coupling. I really don't want to run the king pin with out a disc but there is no buffer zone with it, to be able to tell when to stop lifting. I just guessed and I guessed wrong, the RV was to low by about 3" and made the head stand up. Yikes, no damage, but there has to be a better way.

Odd. I run a lube plate on mine and have enough gap I can tell.

That said, my trailer auto-lands the front legs (and remembers the hitch height when reconnecting) so figuring out how to disable the air leveling easily will be key.

If I do need to manually run it (via a remote control of course LOL) I can see daylight there when needed.

As a reminder, I have a Curt A25 which is essentially the same as the 30K Mopar you have.

Perhaps your lube plate is overly thick?

I got a black graphite impregnated one from B&W that I like. I've only found them available direct with B&W.

I should add that my general procedure is to:
  • roll up on Andersen levelers if needed on low side
  • chock the wheels, both sides
  • hit the auto-land
  • right about when the pads (on Andersen blocks) hit the ground...
  • release the Kraken (jaws)
I'll sometimes have to put the truck in N and just release the parking brake if needed to relieve pressure on the jaws. If the truck is nose down, I'll often have to just put it in R to release pressure. 8/10 times though the curt jaws just release easily.

I've never bought one before and i got this one from camping world for $20. Probably a cheap piece of junk but hasn't made Any noise and i would say it's Pretty thick. it's so weird because on my last set up ( the super glide slider set up), when I Extended my landing gear down , the king pin would come off the head enough to stick a finger under it, of wich I never did. Your right the mopar system is a curt product. I even got behind those huge double jaws to see if I could see the bottom of the king pin slide up the jaw just a fraction, but there was no giving me anything. It's there an ultra thin lube plate that's preferred.

B&W graphite lube plate.

.185" 4.7mm

Not sure where the nylon plate is that came with the Curt hitch so I can't check that one.

Mine must be the same because it's a tick under 5mm.

We will be hooking up in the morning and working our way toward salt lake for a month. So when we un hook again on Saturday, we will see if anything has changed , then we'll be sitting there for a month. The jaws obviously aren't holding the pin to tight, I'd surely notice that at every turn.

sounds like lube plate is too thick.

remove the lube plate. reconnect trailer, raise trailer, measure gap. your lube plate need to be less than measured amount of the gap.

Good idea, ill try that tomorrow morning when we hook up to launch off, thanks carl

Are there different thicknesses. I did buy the 12" round plate because that covers my whole plate

iI have seen two different widths . go on line and check . I have no problem un hooking with the air ride . you should be able to alleviate some pressure off the 5 th wheel when lowering the jacks.

Well Carl, I think I'm even more confused on this situation than I was before. This morning, I took off the lube plate and hooked up, lifted legs and let truck do its thing, we then hit the sir susp button so truck would go to regular position ( and it did), we put the legs down and started lifting and there was no gap or space ever like on my last set up, to give you an indication that your high enough that the pin box has separated from the head. We worked on getting un hooked and were to high, then when we thought we had it, it was to low and the head stood up. I got it off there and reinstalled the plate and hooked back up and hauled @$$ out of there with no answers, just more confusion. There should of been a gap with no lube plate. I'm dumb founded.
