Transfer case question?

I currently have my truck a 2013 Ram Power Wagon in shop. Recently purchased this PW and having bunch of issues. Was told by seller that transfer case is new. Shop said it's a new transfer case but has no tag. Their concern is there is a wire on it that has nothing going to it. Below is a picture. Can anyone tell me what that is. They think it may have the wrong transfer case on it. But would truck even run if it were the wrong transfer case?

Does 4wd work? I believe it is just a 4wd indicator for a different application but could be the proper transfer case depends where they got it.

All that writing on the case makes it look like it came from a salvage yard. Nothing wrong with that, not uncommon to have salvage parts on 10 year old trucks. Can’t tell you if it’s the correct case or not. If everything works, send it.

I dont think i have ever seen one that clean from a salvage yard. I was figuring it was likely a refurbished unit

Is that electronically shifted?
Looking at pics it looks like it would have a shift motor on the back.
His case looks like manual shift.

That single wire on the t-case might be for a speed sensor that feeds the speedometer circuit. For years Jeeps had one and the same area which provided electronic "clicks" as the output shaft turned.

Seems plausible since the wire is coming out of the rear output shaft housing and not from the center of the case where the shift rod and fork would be which would be a range selection indicator light

Yes it is manual shift on 2013 Power Wagon I was able to determine the transfer case with electrical wire and without is interchangeable on my truck. But you cannot use the one without wire on the truck that requires it.

And you are correct regarding the electronic shift housing on the rear - his appears to be manual. It would be nice if the case had a tag on it and we had a picture.

$27K turned to $34K now. SMFH I was completely screwed over on this deal. Backstory I paid $27K for as is used 2013 Power Wagon. 1st needed brakes all the way around that was 1600$ okay no big deal there brakes are brakes. 2nd needs new rear Bilstein Shocks$439. 3rd Front axle diff seals leaking and pinion seeping so $1897 to repair front diff. 4th now for the clunking sound isolated to rear diff. so was openedand this was found see images below. Here is link to full Diagnostic Report Of course bought as is and now im looking at 7600 in repairs because rear diff cannot be found so I am gonna have to get whole rear end complete for $3211.99 totalling to $4086.99 for just that rear so yeah all in $7600. I'm kind of screwed as i just bought it and I'm stuck with it. now i need OEM part #0517301AB or replace whole rear assembly just to get it.

Sounds like you need a new mechanic too, some of those prices seem a bit extreme.

Did you have a pre-purchase inspection done?

I would check with a real driveline shop, if that OEM number is discontinued there has to be a replacement/rebuild available. A driveline expert is what you need, not guys who wonder about plugs/harnesses IMO.

none of these issues were uncovered upon inspection? seems like a basket case.

Who ever is doing your work is taking you to the cleaners! Brakes are nowhere near 1600$ shocks should be about 1/2 that cost and take 30 mins to change the pair. Front diff should be 1/2 that cost just for a complete reseal. And the rear carrier is all that is needed from the photos you can get aftermarket parts for nowhere near their outrageous quote!

One of the hardest lessons it took me a long time to learn was if you can't afford it new, your not going to be able to afford a used one with the maintenance needed much sooner than buying new. Anything older than one year to avoid depreciation is just buying someone else headache or project vehicle.

All PW were manual shift until 2021 I think when the electronic shift became available.

2012 and earlier had an NV transfer case (manual shift), different low ratio, not sure regarding interchangeablity with the BW unit. BW is a good box though.

You can still get manual shift if you get the 6-passenger seating option
