6.7 Engine Air Filter Confusion

Dealer sold you that truck with the OBD cable thingy in it?

Are you sure it wasn't tuned?
I bought it used from a guy who only had for less than a year. I suppose he might have done something to it because it was leveled and tinted, some chrome blacked out, and had huge wheels and tires. I'm not into that stuff so I put stock tires back on and removed the leveler. Not sure you mean by tuned.

Update on the DPF replacement. Another week later and a sensor was replaced and it's running good now but I couldn't smog it because a couple monitors need to reset, according to the smog guy. 120 miles later and they still are not reset. The air filter in it as far as I know is the AA unless they changed it without telling me. Anyway no more fault codes, running good, just dealing with the I/M readiness crap. Also it came back from the dealer this time with the 2 OBD connectors that were hanging loose now joined together. Worst dealer service ever.

FYI, just for clarity, readiness monitors are "set" not reset.

What are those obd connectors for?

I don't know why they are there, but now I can connect a scan tool to the obd connector fixed to the plastic housing.

I wonder if it’s a dealer/bank installed tracking device.

Ordered new 53034051AB from Geno’s. Strangely it’s white media when the original from my 2022 is yellow media. All markings the same.

Swapped and so far no difference. Need to drive a few tanks to see. Usually get 1 regen per tank given my driving habits.

New 53034051AB on top.
Original 14k mile 53034051AB on bottom.

There was documentation that the AB’s media was being over oiled at the manufacturer which may give it that yellow hue.

The original did not feel oily compared to the new one.

Perhaps the media yellows as it ages and due to heat? This one from a new 2023 looks a tad bit more yellow than my new one out of the bag.

@mbarber seems to be the authority on all things aa/ab maybe he will chime in

I was just going to comment it looks to be an over-oiling issue on the older one or a slight change in the media used at the factory. As long as it’s a Mopar or Fleetguard I wouldn’t have any concern.
For reference here is the TSB document regarding the over-oiling issue, as well as a picture of the brand new Fleetguard AF27684 I installed in my truck a few months ago, and a brand new Mopar 53034051AB pulled out of a brand new 2023 Cummins truck:

Interesting. Mine was built October 2021

Will keep an eye on the color over next 14-15k.

Air filters in my 2004.5 5.9L were always yellow. The oil isn't what made the older PN filters yellow, it was just the color of the media.

I believe the "yellowing" refers to the over oiled AA filters.

AB were installed from the factory, no? The memo stated “factory installed”.

Have a 2022 Ram 2500 Cummins and didn't realize this issue until I put in a new air filter and then it threw the particulator code, after being to the dealer the second time they finally said, need to have a Mopar Air Filter installed, didn't have them do it as I figured I could buy a Mopar one cheaper and install myself. Found this thread and read through it, ordered the Fleetguard one, and been running fine and then check engine came on again with same error. Does it take a while to clear out after the new filter has been installed? This is annoying.

My truck came with a Wix when I bought it used. Was a bit dirty, so I swapped to an STP Autozone shelf filter for 2013-2018, and no problems at all.

My best advice is pay the extra money and have the dealer replace the filter. That way it's their problem if a fault code returns. My 2020 truck came from the factory with the AB filter and now has the AA filter that the dealer installed. I can't explain it. The whole air filter sensitivity thing is definitely annoying. On my latest trip a hose blew off and put the turbo out of commission. I drove home 500 miles with severe power loss. It's been nothing but trouble since the fuel pump was replaced. It's going up for sale soon.

Why would you pay the dealership to install the wrong filter?
