So the local dealer won't touch it and will not submit a warranty claim for "what is clearly physical damage".

I spoke with a service rep, service manager and two techs who all make the case that there isn’t enough torque in the folding motor to break plastic like that if the plastic was not compromised. They also believe that if the housing was cracked or dented in, then the result could be what it is showing.

The would not pull out the pieces for fear of making matters worse and their being in the hook and exposed to a claim by me thereafter.

Dealer parts guys cannot give me an estimate of replacement cost because Mopar is not showing it as a stocked item, too new and all produced are going into production lines.

So I have to revert to the driver and an insurance claim.

Oh, did I mention that going down I95 yesterday I heard a notice from that direction and though the mirror had come loose? Turned out that the camera assembly had fallen out and was dangling by a signal video signal wire. I pulled over and sacrificed a 3M microfiber cloth to tie it up ghetto style. Truck Bing so new I did not have time to put my normal bag of tricks in it which would have included multiple types of tape.

Thankfully, no apparent damage to camera nor door of truck where it was dangling.

More importantly, I did not get clipped while pulled over at a spot with only half a true shoulder lane.

As others have said already, I'm loving this for trailer ramp cable damage. Hope you are able to source a replacement soon. Since it no longer matters at the dealership and very likely IMO the transporter will balk at taking responsibility I'd look to see if you have a matching "rope burn" on a piece now stuck inside. If so that might bolster your case with the transporter.

Driver says he has had one insurance claim in 10 years which I find remarkable for someone who moves dozens of cars a week up and down the Eastern third of the country. There is no way even the most meticulous transporter can move that many vehicles and not have the occasional oppsy. But that is pure speculation on my part.

The eastern third includes the DMV so he's a stone cold liar. I know everybody says this about their state but jeez, wife went to Jersey, New York, CT, RI this past weekend and still said Maryland/DC was worse

So I like the thought that the ramp door cable may have caused the damage but…..I would think

1. It would have to have happened when he was driving the truck in, I would think with the truck on an up hill angle, pressure from the cable and the force of the cable releasing, the broken pieces would have fell off and not be pushed into the mirror. After all it had to be in the closed position.
2. There would have had to have some significant tension on that cable to break the housing and when it finally released I would think it would have “snapped“ back also chaffed the side and possibly the back of the mirror at the end. See photo of my.

3. Also how the heck did he get out/in of the truck?

the plastic is already broken why put tape on the pliers this is not CSI lol just pull them out so you can use the mirror until you can buy a replacement as i highly doubt you are getting compensation for it from the transporter after you already signed the packing slip

You seem to have missed the point that this is a CSIesque exercise in discovering if there are additional cable marks on the piece jammed inside.

Driver claims it is “impossible” that his truck did this, using that term at least three times. Yet when I brought up the ramp cable (thank you guys here), he became less confident.

That’s when he started talking about the green pool tubes you see in one of those photos. He acts like that would prevent this, “impossible”. They guy is either an idiot, or thinks I am, if he does not believe that a 7,000 pound truck making contact with such a cable wouldn’t see that foam being cut like hot knife through butter. The foam prevents rubbing, not this.

So the driver is confident that a claim will be denied right away and yet won’t give me his insurance company info. Claims his record is exemplary, he will prevail, and yet he won’t let me “waste my time” by filing a claim.

I don’t want to jam him up with higher insurance premiums, I just want my $1,000 back from him which isn’t even enough to pay for a new mirror. If he wants to do that quietly and not have a claim filed, I am all for that and will sign an indemnification releasing him of further claims by me.

I will see what the CSI ;-) removal of the other plastic shows before contacting him again.

I assume also it was in loading. I know it was loaded at least twice, at the start and somewhere in between to get another vehicle off. Possibly three times.

If he was moving very slowly and realized he made contact with the cable, perhaps the outer shell was cracked and indented, but not broken as shown in the OP. Then, when the mirror was unfolded, swung out, those indented pieces were caught in the process and why they are inside now.

If he realized quickly that he’s made contact, stopped and slowly backed off, the cable would not have vibrated such that it could contact the door. Plus, he had the cable clad in pool noodles so even if there was contact, the noodles would have done their job.

All speculation and I appreciate the thought.

As for his extricating himself, either out the window or though the sunroof.

Born in the Bronx, raised in Yonkers, a decade in NJ, 20 years in CT and FL full time for 8 years after 25 years of seasonal visits.

Jersey drivers are the worst generally IMLTHO. YMMV.

Hey what did you end up doing about this? I just bought almost the same truck as you with a cracked drivers mirror housing and I can't find individual parts for the mirror... just the whole $1k mirror. Hopefully you found something of use!
