Setting up Equalizer WD Hitch - those that have please chime in

I can’t imagine trying to pull that monster off at a campground. I use an Equalizer with their standard shank. I have Rock Tamer flaps attached to it, so I just use those like giant carry handles. When I get to the campground the hitch comes off the truck and I just pop the ball back into the trailer coupler and lock it in place, so the hitch stays with the trailer. Spring bars just sit on the L brackets if we’re staying in a secure location, or go in the pass through storage if not.

Edit: clarification on where I store the hitch.

I always left my Equalizer hitch in the truck receiver. Most likely will do the same with the GenY setup mainly because where would you put it at the campsite anyway? I wouldn't feel comfortable just leaving it on the ground behind the TT. What if someone takes it? Then your really screwed. Weight on this thing makes to handle it as less as you can anyway. I could care less if I leave it attached to it truck and drive around with it in the receiver when I'm unhooked.

That's high. I have a 27' Airstream.

Are you getting that much rear drop on the rig when your loaded? You must be.

Hmm... Now you have really thrown me for a loop. AS is level and truck too when comparing wheel well spacing.

I'm pretty sure I saw that same picture on a post in the Airstream Forum Lol.

Whats the height from the ground to the top of your hitchball when unloaded? You have rear air ride or coils? What year is your AS? Looks like a Flying Cloud too which is what we have. Mine is a 2022.

My 2500 in the rear from ground to top of wheel well unloaded on level ground is 43 - 3/8 inches on both left and right sides. It has Ram Air in rear as well. Sweet spot for hitch ball height from my research and speaking with AS dealer is about 21 to 21.5 inches for hitch ball height unloaded.

My 2500 in the rear from ground to top of wheel well unloaded on level ground is 43 - 6/16 inches on both left and right sides. It has Ram Air in rear as well. Sweet spot for hitch ball height from my research and speaking with AS dealer is about 21 to 21.5 inches for hitch ball height unloaded.
I'm at 42 3/8" in the rear unloaded. 3500 4WD, no air suspension.

Unloaded ball height is just over 24". Trailer is a 2022 GT 25FBT. I also started out with the 21.5" recommendation, but had to bring it up I think 2 holes to get it level.

Very interesting. Your truck sits about an inch lower than mine (only because I raised mine an inch with the leveling kit) plus has rear coils so will likely have an inch more sag too than mine when loaded. However your coupler height is alot higher to get your AS level. Your AS coupler height should be the same as mine. 24" height however on the ball is quite a bit higher. Most people with our AS TT target 21 to 23 inches depending if you have air ride or not.

You must be dropping at least 2 - 3 inches in the rear when you are all loaded full propane, gear, passengers, plus perhaps even water in the Airstream?

Have you hooked up to the trailer yet? I would be willing to bet the dealers unloaded hitch hight is low..

He has a 3500 with leafs according to his signature and being 1” lower makes perfect sense.

P.S. 6/16” is usually referred to as 3/8” (unless you are dealing with hydraulic hoses lol )

That's what I'm doing now for the 2500 so we will see. Im discounting how was setup with previous TV because it wasn't level and that was mainly because of the hitch weight and total gross was at the max. Hence the reason we bought the RAM.

You got me good on the measurement. Lol. Always hated fractions Lol.

I work with fractions and decimals on the daily if you are not used to them its easy to not know lol no shame in that… often times you can read 100s of pages on how to hook up to a certain trailer with a certain hitch and then when you go to do it things are different.

The best thing to do is just park the Truck and trailer on level ground and grab a level and do some trial and error with the hitch setup until you find what works for you. There are just so many different variables.

My truck actually doesn’t drop that much hitched up. I think it was only around an inch. I’ve got all the measurements written down in my equalizer manual, but it’s in the trailer.

I did have full propane, but no batteries on the tongue as I moved them inside. Last time I checked with my little scale, tongue weight was 988 lbs.

I was surprised that my ball was so high as well after seeing other folks say they were in the 22” range.

Well I get the replacement Boss GenY Torsion Hitch arriving next week so can finally get this done. I'll post back with my measurements once I get completed.

I'm starting with 21 to 21.5 inch ball height and will see where that puts me. This results with 1 bottom hole showing on the shank. I get slightly more ball drop playing with adding more washers. If I move up another hole I add another 1.5 inches of height and that will probably be too much but who knows. If I had to do that it would put me 1 hole down to where yours is now set. Let's see where we end up!

I edited my post above to clarify. I hang the hitch from the coupler on the trailer, locked with the same locking pin I use when towing, and with the hitch locking pin through the same hole it would normally be in. Never went anywhere in the years I’ve been RVing.
