Dealer Oil Change Prices Out of Control!

Biggest problem with any of these dealer offers (other than the price) is that if they go under, you're screwed.
I never buy any extras in the finance office. Back in 2008 in a moment of weakness I guess, I bought into a protection option. The dealer was a solid old company and was doing fine but the company that was the actual underwriter of the plan I purchased went under. So I got a letter in the mail from the dealership telling me that they were very sorry but I no longer had that particular package for which I had already paid.

Now I'm back to stonewalling the finance guy like I always did before.

Hey @firemansdiesel , what agency do/did you work for? I did the first half of my career with Ukiah City FD then went over to CAL FIRE to finish up. Retired in 2014.
I’m at Coast Guard Petaluma Fire Department, located in Two Rock area of Sonoma County. 25+ years and retiring end of September of this year. We run alot with E1472 out of Cal Fire Petaluma Station.

Congrats on the retirement. I'm beating you by 1 month. Retire in Aug, but taking 10 weeks of sick leave so I can get out of here in June. Already bought a house out of state and sold my house here in Cali.

I always do my own oil changes, this is the first truck i have warranty + a extended protection plan. Has anybody ever been denied warranty work due to the dealer not having service records?

Congrats on the retirement! I loved my job and had a great career, but I like retirement better.
Thank you and best job in the world.

Congrats! I will be out of Cali in near future.

If you have the reciept along with documentation of mileage, date, and using appropriate grade of oil and filter. You’ll be fine. Same with fuel and air filters, gear oil, etc. For documentation you can make a spreed Excel sheet and/or your owner page on Ram has a link to document.

Just as an update I got quoted by 3 seperate dealers here in South Jersey right around $300 for an oil and filter change with 10w30 syn blend (Rotella T5). If i wanted 5w40 full syn (Rotella T6) that added another $75 on it. For the air and cabin filters to be changed was another $215. The real kickin the stones was the fuel filters which I had one of the three quote me $700 to do both and the lowball of the three was sitting at $525. I can get all the filters and oil to do it myself for right around $300. I have no idea why the hell somebody would pay that to a dealer.

My biggest problem paying someone (dealership, JiffyLube type place, etc) isn't so much the money, its that I don't trust any of these outfits nor the clowns that work there to do the job RIGHT. I'm not a wealthy man but I have plenty of money to pay for an oil change, even an overpriced one-- but I choose to do it myself simply because I don't trust anyone but myself to do it. Saving money is just a nice bonus.

Over a thousand dollars to do a service job on a pickup??? That’s insane!!!

i didn't know this existed. It works out to about 110 per synthetic oil change and tire rotation.
Airtim: seems like a good deal, and maybe for the gas vehicles the dealership will honor it. Speaking from experience if its a diesel even the ecodiesel the dealership in my area say no can do and won't honor the price. Its not a dealership offer.

Yeah Amen on that. On my RAM 1500 I let a local dealership where I knew the head service writer do most of the services. He was fair and his prices were in line with most non dealership shops in the area. I spent the last 20 years in that side of the industry and I understand a mark up and the need to be profitable on the dealer side. That being said he passed away 2 years ago and since then the prices went up at that dealership and the quality went downhill. The profit margin on those services but especially the fuel filters borders on criminal. One of the techs that I know there basically said most 6.7L owners do their own services so the volume is low hence the staggering mark up. My biggest issue is time but on the plus side due to the low mileage I put on the truck its a once a year issue for me and it gives me a chance to help teach the youngest who for some ridiculous reason wants to turn wrenches like his old man :)

For me, it's not the money either. I just don't like paying someone for something I am fully capable of doing myself. One of the things that make my oil changes easier on my vehicles is Fumoto Valves I installed.
I have the luxury of being able to take it to a bay to do mine with a hydraulic lift so that makes a lot of things easier to do.Ive seen those valves on Geno's garage and thought about pulling the trigger.

I did Valvomax on mine. It’s great not having to mess with a drain plug.

I called the warranty company and asked this. You have to keep documents of buying the filter, oil and filter. I take pics when I change just to have extra.

I use the CARFAX car care app to keep track of it and upload screenshots or pictures of my receipts. It’s cool because you can set your own mileage interval for certain services if you want to do it sooner than the factory interval and it gives you notifications when your getting close.

Nice. I didn't know about this. Thanks!
