Borla S Type exhaust

Thanks for the sound clips. It sounds great without the resonator. I’m going to try the same. Hopefully you find something that prevents black paint from peeling off the exhaust tip.

So while I've really been enjoying the Borla, I am finding quite a bit of black soot on the tip which if I don't remove does start to stain the exhaust tip.
Anyone else having a similar experience?

I do generally leave the MDS on as it doesn't bother me (no idea if this is the cause of the soot)
I do have the tip angled slightly downward... would setting it more level minimize the sooting?

Try non-ethanol fuel, if you can find it. That or make sure to use top tier fuel like Sunoco, Exxon, or even Costco. Cleaner fuel equals cleaner exhaust. Very common to have soot build up on any vehicle from that. Also limit idle time.

Or get a black tip. ;)

Even with my black tip, I can se a bit of soot on it. I've seen it on all of my vehicles, no matter what gas I run.

Thanks, I already use Top Tier and I don't use the remote start at all.. the only idling is at stop lights/traffic.
Non-ethanol is a thought, but ouch...

Here’s what I think and you can’t change my mind.

It’s a thing that “rolled wall” or double wall tips do.

Normal “stock” cut pipes soot up inside but it doesn’t get on the outside of the tip. It’s just the way the air moves. As soon as you put a rolled tip on it, you’ll get soot on the outside of the tip. I’ve had it happen to me in the past and thought the same thing, only changed the tailpipe and get soot now. Built a cat- back for my Porsche and immediately started getting soot like crazy. Couldn’t keep the tailpipe clean, it would even get on the bumper

Something about the rolled edges makes the soot get all over the outside of the tip.

Look at your old tip it’s probably black inside but not outside. This is my work tundras tail pipe 160,000 miles on her and lots of idling. Black soot inside but not really outside although it is dirty and oxidized but not soot.

Perfectly reasonable possibility...

I just installed the Borla S type #140851 on my 2022 2500 tradesman. I gotta be honest. It’s too damn loud. Idk how you that have this exhaust say you can’t hear it at highway speed. You obviously have a different kit than I have. Mine is one of the ones that only came with 2 clamps as well. I’m going to have to figure out how to make it quieter with a resonator or it’s coming off. If you think this thing is quiet must be either a lot younger or more deaf than I am, LOL.

That's why I just removed my resonator and left the rest of the stock exhaust. More than enough sound for me.

There is very little advantage to messing with factory exhaust nowadays, they are already optimized for performance, economy and drivability..unless loud is considered an improvement. IMO

Don't know what to tell you... neither my wife nor I hear much of anything at highway speed with the radio on... even with it off, I can hear it but it certainly isn't 'loud' or 'annoying'.

It is about 30# lighter is all I can definitely state...

Anything past 10% throttle and mine sounds like a red eye hellcat being flogged. At highway speeds, while it doesn’t drone you can definitely hear mine over the radio or wind noise. I got a defect. I like the exhaust. I just wish it was about 35% less aggressive. Thankfully I planned on sound deadening the whole interior anyway. That and maybe a small resonator pre cat back will make it perfect for me.

100% agree. I didn’t buy the kit for a performance advantage at all. If that was my intention I would have left the cat back exhaust stock and installed a set of ARH headers. More than double the money but it would have been an increase in sound and an actual measurable difference in performance. I simply wanted it slightly louder. I was more than willing to pay to play for an exhaust with no drone, and that as multiple people described as “sounds like stock inside”. Sorry. False news. From my research everything else out there had noticeable drone.

Yep. So far, everyone I've sent the clips too have decided to go this route.

If someone has a place to upload them and share them here, I'll be glad to send them to you.

Does anybody know offhand the factory exhaust pipe size in/out of the factory muffler and the length of the factory muffler? Length of resonator?
