2022 Digital Rear View Mirror

For some reason cannot seem to figure this out. I am putting a shell on. And the digital rear view only works from the cab mounted camera. It has an "Aux" which is the trailer cam. Am I missing something? Why is the tailgate camera not an option on the digital rear view camera or am I missing something?

There's a few threads somewhere here (probably modifications forum) on relocating the camera or disconnecting the bumper cable at the cab and adding a camera and cable to the shell.

@Patriot Motor Sports USA has a thread on relocating the existing bed cam (I think it was the digital one).

The back up camera is what’s on the tail gate handle. AFAIK there is no way to make that camera show in the digital rear view mirror.
You can see the back up camera on the uconnect screen only. And you can view it while in reverse OR for 10 second intervals while driving forward at any speed.

Maybe @Jimmy07 will chime in about getting a live view in the digital rear view mirror from a camera other than the one in the CHMSL or the tow-mode wired camera. XH7

In fact, that’s how I would do it in your position; use a tow mode camera and cable to get the live feed in the rear view mirror. That way you can mount your shell and still see behind when driving forward.

Correct me if you m wrong. But once you mount your shell, aren’t you Your CHMSL camera(s) and lights useless?Even if so, please don’t pull the lamp assembly apart.

You’re absolutely right.

I posted a while back about installing the tow camera kit (68527599AA) on my trailer. Going from a wireless non-HD camera with another screen to stick on the windshield to having that crisp HD image in the digital rear view mirror* was REALLY great. As you note, putting the cap on the bed effectively eliminates that option from the CHMSL. There has been a post about pulling the camera out of the CHMSL to apply it to the top of the cap and wire it back to the slot in the CHMSL. I thought about that - but ended up buying another trailer tow camera kit (68527599AA) from a forum member instead and have been working with a friend who helped me with my trailer installation on how to set it up for the cap.

We probably won’t do it until I finish camping later this month but I think we’ve come up with a good plan for this that involves mounting the camera inside the cap at the top of the rear window (I tested the view and it’s very good even with a less than clean rear window), running the cable through the hole in the interior bed wall by the tie down which gets you in to the inside of that part of the bed. Here we plan to coil some 30’ of the 50’ cable that comes with the kit and secure it within the bed wall, running the cable out the hole above the 7-pin connector then behind the license plate to the proprietary tow camera connector on the left side of the license plate.

Not ideal, but a very simple solution to regain a rear view mirror capability with a cap when not towing something.

When we do the project, I’ll take pictures and post them here.

*while it’s great to not need yet another screen for the rear view camera, the MASSIVE cluster of crap on the windshield of this truck is damn near inexcusable! It has to block 40% or more of the view toward the right. There has to be a way to put more of the electronics over the headliner and leave the windshield with more open space. But I get that it is what it is - so using the digital mirror is practically a requirement rather than losing another inch of windshield space to another monitor…

You must have the FCW/ACC option? The DRVM on my truck does not block much more than the standard mirror truck, and the same as a standard mirror truck with auto-dim high beams.

Yes you’re right. It’s a MASSIVE hunk of shtuff….love and appreciate the tech, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired though….

I'm in a similar situation and wish the aftermarket would step in on this. Never thought about placing the aux tow camera INSIDE the cap - brilliant idea. Will be following your progress.

Works great though I need to recheck bolts/screws as it’s slightly “bouncy” - I don’t get that with the trailer cam so I assume it’s something about this installation.
