Loud Clutch Fan?

Still has a small roar but nothing like the super long engine roar it had before

what vehicle? be interesting to know if your mpg goes up?
2022 ram 2500 mega, Cummins. MPGs were already great. I was 19-20 combined. I regenerate a lot those which drives those numbers lower.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but has anyone heard a clutch fan noise that resembles the sound of sticking a zip tie in a fan? Sound increases with rpm's, and can really hear it when next to a wall or barricade from the reverberation.
No noise inside the cab, only when youre standing by the grill. Ive tried to look myself but theres too much dang plastic in the way of the fan.
Took it to the dealership for a recall and asked to look into the sound, tech said it was normal... I am by no means a mechanic, but have spent a fair amount of time around engines... Doesnt sound normal to me.
No other related issues though, rides and drives like normal!

Just fyi. There is a national backorder on clutch fans. This should tell everyone something.

I am going to see about trying to get mine replaced (barring the national backorder). That 747 under the hood is annoying at best. What I hate the most though is it is not consistent with when (engine hot or cold), which truck start in the day and so on....

Well, there seems to be a national backorder on everything these days. I just waited two months to get a warranty appointment for the dealer to look and tell me I have a leaking shock at 4,000 miles. (I told them the same thing 2 months ago.) The shock is nationally backordered with no eta. Same with appliances, building supplies, kitchen cabinets, RV parts, etc. etc. etc.

Mine still has a roar sound after replacement. Not as bad as it was but it tamed it down. Still off that it does this.

I have a 2022 Ram 3500 with the same issue. Went to the idiots locally and crickets. It's been a while since anyone posted so I am curious if there has been a fix? It drives me insane how loud it is.

As far as loud fan in the am or a hot start from what I understand, the drain back ports for the silicone fluid line up when the truck is shut off and the fan stops spinning allowing fluid to migrate into the working chamber locking the fan on. Also if it was locked in and running when the engine was shut down it will be locked in on the next startup.
Furthermore, In the morning the fan will kick out faster with higher RPM as the fluid drains via centrifugal force out of the working chamber. If you putt putt for the first few miles the fan moves slower, and will take longer to get out of lockup.

i have a 2022 5500 was quiet as a mouse. until yesterday . i have a loud “fan” constantly coming on regardless of temp and it’s really loud. gauges aren’t moving trucks not getting hot. mostly does it in lower gears as well and i find the power decreases as it’s on and it’s taking longer to get to upper speed and gears. truck always has a load on and dealership says they ordered a new “fan” and it’s good to keep working. i’m worried the belt might go and leave me stranded. should i be worried and park it till they figure it out? our dealership here is also useless and mechanics came from a cracker jack box i swear.

No need to worry about the belt, you will be fine as far as that goes. You may notice less mpg with a cool running motor and constantly locked up fan clutch however.

Clearly the service department is not that bad if they ordered you a new fan…. You are fine to run it as is the belt is made to hold the fan at full lockup….

There is a thermostat in the system to keep the temps up. Should not have a cool engine it should still reach operating temp

^^^This. My 75 F250 doesn't even have a fan clutch. Just constantly drives the fan with an old v belt. Still works fine.

Yes but they ordered me the wrong fan lol OK good to know about the bell because I had a belt go on my other 5500 last year and it was not fun trying to creep it 5 miles took three hours lol

Well that is hard to believe they ordered the wrong one as its ordered by VIN im guessing the wrong one came in

I’ve never had a fan stick on a small Cummins, but have at work on my isx. Truck hovered around 165 and another cat we have if the manual switch is on it won’t even get hot enough to regen.
