Recently got a used '19 2500 with the 6.4. Truck had 13K miles on it and a lot of idling time. Computer had lifetime MPG at 8 mpg. I filled the tank up today and with a full tank it said range is 240 miles even after driving 5 miles easy 40 MPH roads. I believe all of them come with a 31 gallon gas tank, say worst case scenario I get 15 mpg on the highway, should be at least 450 miles.
Is the truck just calculating that based on the previous driving habits of 8 mpg or is my DTE goofed up? I did reset the MPG average and it didn't change it.

Thanks.

Worst case scenario of 15 mpg on the highway? You're dreaming. I just got back from a 200 mile each way round-trip at 70mph and averaged 13.2mpg. My miles to empty showed 375 when I filled it up.

Most fuel computers are based on previous driving habits as you say...my truck only has 650 miles and most my driving so far has been around town, I just filled up and it said 397 to empty, that would be 12.8...I can see easily getting 15 mpg as it breaks in and start doing some highway driving, especially if you stay somewhere close to the speed limit.

Not a chance. Maybe with the cruise set at 55 downhill with a tailwind.

At 70 for about 30 miles I averaged 17. That was hand calculated. Just haven't noticed the DTE until now. Mine has stock tires and 8 speed with 3.73.

Trip from Tampa to Charleston, SC...
Stock truck, just me, luggage, and the topper.
16 mpg, 437 miles, 27 gallons @ 70mph

Not bad at all, 3.73s?

Yep... and that was no cruise control or ACC, it was surging and annoying hell, it has been to the dealer but I've been working from home since that trip so no chance to see if the issue has been reolved.
I filled up at a nearby Costco when I left and filled up at a Costco just outside of town when I arrived.
Unless I'm towing, I'm good with running 87 from anyplace that is Top Tier designated... and that's usually Costco

I actually regularly get 14.5, 17 even on a round trip to Chicago (250 miles..) admittedly the 17 was my wife driving and she’s slow as all hell, but hey, it’s do-able.

My 6.4 easily averages 17 with a clean air filter. No way you get the recommended mileage life between changes. As soon as it gets dirty after about 5K miles the MPG drops fairly rapidly. I couldn’t believe the amount of debris that makes it into the air box. Must be the Ram inlet design. At $35 a pop I am seriously considering a screen.

When I fill up the computer shows just over 400 miles to empty. I only have about 2500 miles on it but the MPG is going up as the engine starts to wear in. Now I wonder if the octane your using is making a difference. I always fill with 89 octane - mid grade.

Ethanol content can also be factors.

Yes that’s for sure. I quit going to stations that are non franchise. For whatever reason I didn’t get the boost in mileage with Premium like with my 07 5.7. This one likes good quality mid grade period. I have had it exactly 1 year and have just over 17K miles on it.

89 is what is recommended for 'best' performance in the OM...premium is just pissing money away.
If Costco sold 89, I'd certainly get some...but it doesn't so for daily use I put 87 in the truck.

Ethanol may have been an issue for older engines, but it has been in our fuel supply since at least the early 90's...the only difference is the energy made between gas and E10, even that # is miniscule.

When you fuel whatever you were getting just gets calculated I just reset at fuel ups if I’m in the mood. My fuel comp is wrong every time. If it says 17 you can bet when you gas up it will calculate to 15.8-16 sooo I just assume it’s 1 gal less. As far as octane It recommends 89 but you can use 87 as long as you’re not getting any kind of detonation. And that 10% alcohol is pure garbage, it’s all I can get here in Florida but was out in Okla, put no alcohol gas, 2mpg better.

Considering the price different (at least locally) between the two, +2 mpg is an insufficient increase to warrant the additional cost.
Try to get gas from Top Tier stations to avoid fuel related issues with the engine.

There is non-ethanol gas in Florida... the website and the app aren't the best, but here is a link... also, most WaWa's have non-ethanol gas...you can tell if the price is in blue.
Pure gas

Writing this from the passenger seat with the Mrs driving as we speak (she gets to drive the non-hauling section..). I gassed up with 90 non-ethanol ($2.65 in KY) Computer is reporting 17.8. She drives almost exclusively at 68 on cruise.

I however get a lot less.. usually.

Way to many variable to take into consideration to say 'the computer says X...put your numbers into fully and put the widget in your sig.

it calculates off a set history give it time and it will calculate correctly, usually a tank or two
