RV wiring / trailer question

I would just set it up with a 30A pigtail. Not all camp sites have 50A service, and 30A is most common, the adaptor would be cheaper as well. But thats assuming you have no AC, microwave, water heater or any heavy amp needs.

It's semantics. The RV is 120V. Saying it's 240V is also confusing for new RV owners.

In my case, I also work on a lot of 208V single phase equipment, so for me it's best to think in those terms. I think we're all in agreement how it works, perhaps just not how to describe it.

RE: adapters. Unless you built it yourself and didn't connect them, all commercially available 50A dogbone adapters connect L1 and L2 together so the red wire is going to be energized. In my mind, it's just plain dumb that it wasn't connected to the breaker seeing that it's a 2-pole breaker. Perhaps it's marginal, but it would be safer connected to the breaker.
I agree its very odd and dangerous to have the secondary hot feed taped off and tucked how it is it would have been much safer to have it in the breaker or atleast a marrette on it then some tape on the marrette and wire jacket so the marrette does not vibrate off

I don't think so. I'm not an View attachment 41242electrical genius. I installed a surge protector on my camper. Here's a before photo I took.
I just went through this issue. The 50 amp breaker is in the middle. All the breakers to the left are running off one leg and those to right are running off the other leg. The genius that wired my camper put all 3 ACs and the microwave on one side and low draw components on the other. Circuits tripping, nothing working right. Moved one AC and microwave to the other side (right) and low draw components to the slot vacated. Now everything works.

I have a Hughes surge protector and noted on the app that one side was always pulling high amps and the other hardly any. I never go camping without a voltmeter. New RVs are a PÍA.

I use a portable Progressive Industries 50A EMS and it's great. Shows the details on both legs (V/A/Freq), checks for Neutral and Ground faults, etc. Last time I used it, I had to have the (state) park maintenance fix the floating (missing) ground at the pedestal. Guy said most were put in by a licensed electrician without proper grounding and they were still fixing them.

About 20 years ago I learned a hard lesson. Before surge protectors were common. Plugged into a 50 amp pedestal put in by an electrician. Unfortunately it was 240 V and blew out everything. Had to replace TVs, Microwave, and anything plugged in along with some melted wires.

My boss had a customer set up 50A service for him to visit on a large property. The customer wanted to sell him the property as well as my boss wanting to purchase it, unfortunately he set it up as 240vac not knowing the RV's 50A is 115vac. Just like Surdoc4, it damaged everything plugged in as well the inverter.
