Why are these trucks considered 4.5 gen and not 5th gen?

Trying to figure out why people define the 2019+ trucks as 4.5 gen and not 5th gen... The 2019+ trucks are totally different than 2018 and earlier.

My understanding is that the "5th gen" will maintain the same exterior and potentially add:

* Panoramic moonroof/sunroof (maybe)
* Larger cab/2nd row which might do away with the Mega Cab (I really hope the Mega Cab stays as a model)
* Maybe a new transmission (Allison or ZF might replace Aisin and/or 68RFE)
* Maybe a new dash layout - probably built around the 12" screen
* Split tailgate option

What am I missing here?
The five things listed wouldn't make it a 5th gen (to me at least). It's already a 5th gen. Those 5 things listed would just be additions or options to the current model.

It's a snarky way to point out they didn't change the cab or box to integrate the same changes they made to the "real" 5th gen 1500.
Ahhh… so this is just because somebody got butt-hurt that we didn't get all the options that the 1500's had?

It’s common practice for all of the manufacturers to update their half tons and then usually a year or two later roll out the HD version. Half tons sell the most so that’s where they want to focus. They can’t or won’t adapt the current old style cab to work with the panno-roof. I would bet my lunch money the mega will be gone when they go to the 5th gen cab as they wouldn’t put big money in to a cab stamping machine for such low production numbers.

As I understand it the 5th generation 1500 box has higher sides and taller taillights (to house the tailgate electronics).

Per the February production numbers 11% of 2500's and 15% of 3500's were MegaCabs. Compare that to only 2% of 2500's and 4% of 3500's that were regular cab (everything else was CC). As they do get a premium for a MegaCab it would seem to make more sense to continue them. After all I would really be surprised if they eliminate the regular cab, and those they charge less for.

They didn’t make a separate stamp/mold for the regular cab 1/2 ton and don’t think they will for the HD. It will be ‘’one cab size fits all’’ I would guess. Just like Henry said ‘your can have it any colour you want....as long as it is black.’’ I could be wrong but we will know in the next five years ;).

I could see them doing away with the Quad Cab. Combining the Mega and Crew doesn't compute unless the cost of making the two cabs is not profitable. And making one cab fits all should not be a longer one. The CC with 8" bed is already a bit too long.

Says who? I thought longer is always better.:rolleyes:

I think a number of those who need a pure work truck are more likely to want an HD regular cab. I would imagine that would especially be true in the 4500 and 5500. Don't those use the same HD cab as the 2500 & 3500?

Even if only 2-4% of the trucks are reg cab, I could see it probably staying available as another "classic" like the 4th gen 1500 lives on. Fleet buyers still need cheap utility trucks.

An 8" bed is long? Imagine 8'. That's 12 times as long!

The cab themselves is what is different from the 4th to 5th generation. Compare both trucks side by side and they are very differents. The 5th cab is also more spacious. The 4.5th is an hybrid between both generations so the HD don't look too old compared to the newer 1500s. It still use the 4th cab, but refreshed.

My understanding was that the 2021 was going to be the 5th gen models with updated u connect an better camera systems, sounded mostly tech stuff

The main reason they call them a 4.5 Gen is because they didnt change the designation.

The 1500 went from the 4th Gen DS to the 5th Gen DT.

The 2500 is still DJ. When that changes it will be the 5th Gen.

With out burning up 34 minutes of data , does anybody have the jist of what it says the differences are
