Okay, maybe a little of click bait in the title, but I did brake something on my rear driveshaft...

Anyone know what that metal ring that is zipped tied up in the first photo and lose on the driveshaft in the last two photos is or what it does? There is about a half inch or more gap between it and the shinny silver ring just behind the U joints when you align them over each other. There is no play in the drive shaft and it still turns just fine. No grease or are anything slung around under there. The only thing I can think is that it holds a dust boot or something on, but it seems way to heavy duty just for that.

Can someone post a photo of what that area looks like on their non-broken truck please? The dealership said they can't look at the truck until the 21st of this month, so want to make sure it is nothing important. No need to crawl under your truck, just take a shot from just in front of the passenger's side rear wheel and you should have an identical view to my first photo here. Thanks!

Most people who have this happen just remove the ring. I contacted AAM several times and asked about the necessity of this ring and nobody would ever answer my question.

Thanks for the link!

Came here looking for more carnage.

If it was my truck, I would unbolt the driveshaft and slip the ring off and save it just in case I had some weird vibrations and wanted to figure out how to put it back on.

I know, click bait right :p Since the truck only has 8k miles on it, I'll see if they will replace it under warranty. If not, I'll remove the ring and forget about it.

Its a vibration damper just toss it, i have never seen any ill effects from tossing it out

Everyone breaks that. Mine popped off 2 weeks after getting my '22 PW when I went wheeling. Still zip-tied to the diff.

How many miles do you guys have on your trucks since you "removed" this part? I've not seen/heard/felt any ill effects from it not being on there either. However, if it is there to cancel out small vibrations, what effect will those small vibrations have on the other drive line parts after 30k-40k miles? I'm just wondering why they would go through the trouble of engineering and producing these if they really don't do anything at all. That said, if they don't replace mine under warranty I'm sure I'll just toss it as well. lol

Try contacting aam and asking them. I did several times and never got an answer which is kind of crappy as whenever i asked dana spicer a question they always got back with an answer. I read on the other ram forum the rear driveshaft is backordered and somebody said his dealer claims if you run without it your extended warranty will be void. He said he has been working with ram but no luck yet. My front drive shaft is flinging grease and i go in Wednesday to get it checked out.

lol I too was expecting carnage and was planning on a follow up question of "how in the heck did you do that??" seeing as the driveshafts in these things are freaking monstrous!

300,000km no ill effects
