CP4 recall thread (merged threads) - Y78 Jan 2022 recall campaign - Parts Available May 10 for 2020 trucks only

For those more mechanically-knowledgeable than me, I would appreciate hearing thoughts on what else, if anything should/ should not be included in the RECALL besides a new pump and the labor to install it. Should I expect new fuel filters ? Other related parts ? After the dealer has done the recall work, or after his "inspection" of the work done by another, should I expect him to dislose to me any sign of damage, like metal shavings, in the system ?
I’m guessing they are going to have them inspect for debris during the recall, and if none is found, they’ll simply do the swap with these parts:

If debris is found, they’ll probably do the full repair that will also include these parts:

Dealer parts order for the Y78 recall opened up yesterday (May 10).

Best get it in ASAP or get in a LONG line.

I took mine in today for "inspection" the dealer claimed was required. All they did was verify the ESN and check the pump hadn't been replaced. No codes, asked me if I was having any trouble. I didn't want to pile on so I'll wait until they call to schedule and tell them there's an oil leak at the front somewhere. It's not dripping, so no real concern just yet.

This high volume dealer can only order 1 kit/week. Some are getting less allocations than that. I'm told there are only two others in front of me. 3-4 weeks and mine should be done.

They also did the Z08 wiper arm recall while he was under the hood. They get .1 hour for that one, LOL.

My great Service Manager called to say my Y78 recall CP4.2 replacement parts will be here tomorrow. Taking the truck in tomorrow, he needs to record the engine number and will make an appointment for the change out.

Hello John
Did he indicate how long job will take thanks

No he didn't. He was going on vacation this week, so I just told him to call me when he's back and ready. He did tell me to return to stock tune because they will definitely flash the TCM

I've seen a few techs mention they could do 2/day if nothing else.

That's just the pump replacements with no existing fuel system damage.

The TSB for the full replacement is 10.5-11.3 hours, they add a little extra for dual alts and adaptive steering if equipped. The pump only should be about 3-4 tops. Most backyard guys are doing their conversions in that time.

pump alone is just a few hrs. main p.i t.a. is that lower bolt, engine size. even worse on an aftermarket pump!

they do not need to reflash for the vb recall.

Took my 2019 2500 6.7 68RFE in for the Y78 recall yesterday and it went like this:

Dropped off truck at my local AZ dealership, SM said that they could not “order the parts” but had to send pics of CP4 and ESN to Chrysler Engineering and then they would send the parts. Said it was not only a pump swap, but had to relocate the PCM bracket as well as a couple other things due to the size differential between the current CP4 and the replacement pump. This also assuming there are no metal shavings which require the injectors being replaced and all that jazz too. He said it was a CP3, but I was skeptical of that comment based on readings here on this forum.

Based on that info, he said come back tomorrow and pick up your truck. We will re-schedule the Y78 when the parts get here.

Flash forward to today when I got the call and went to pick up the truck… he says that there are not parts available for the 2019 trucks yet, as others have reported. He also went on to say that he believes it is PCM software based, not hardware based, due to the fact that the PCM software on the 2020+ trucks with the SO motor is different than the 2019 software. Why is software the issue? The EPA.

Every change to the PCM software has to be pushers through the EPA for emissions compliance. Seeing that the 2020+ trucks share closer PCM software with the truck coming out of Saltillo, he believes that they prioritized the new software with the EPA to keep the assembly line going and decided to get to the older 2019 PCM software afterwards. Thus the lag in getting the 2019 trucks going on the recall…

He said to check back in a month or so and see if it works a resolved then, as he feels that will be the case.

Anyways…. It makes sense to me, but I obviously cannot know if he is just full of crap or if he truly felt like being candid, but I am leaning towards him being candid based on our past interactions.

That’s where I am at in this process and will update as we go forward.

Obviously any additional information would be helpful as well!!

I called the dealership in upstate NY yesterday about my 2019. He called me back 10 minutes after i asked about the recall parts and said they were available in Columbus, OH. I mentioned the 2020/2019 thing to him, he told me parts are VIN specific and I could come in next week for the swap. No mention of any outstanding issues on this not be able to be completed. I guess wait a week and find out.

After several false starts with the dealer and several calls up the food chain with RamCare, was told yesterday by a RamCare supervisor that the 2019 vs. 2020 issue is a fact. No explanation was given on "parts unavailability" for the 2019s, but that this is the case and I need to wait until the 2019 fix is released.

No ETA as of now on the fix.

Got my recall yesterday done yesterday. Took 4-5hrs depending on when they actually pulled it in the shop. I have a '20 HO if that matters for the above conversation. They didn't mention any filings or existing damage so as far as i know it was just the pump kit. I am deleted so as expected, there was a few MIL's when i picked it up (and we discussed) so i reflashed in the parking lot and was off to the races. The pump is so much quieter than the CP4 that was in there. Power delivery and response seems exactly the same.

My dealer booked my 19 in and has pump kit on order as of yesterday

I was booked as well, until I wasn't.

I'm not saying that your dealer won't do it for your 2019, but based upon what I was told by the dealer, 2 RamCare supervisors and what I have seen posted here/elsewhere I would double-check with your dealer as they may not have the correct info.

Hope you somehow get the fix anyway!
