8.5” vs 12” touchscreen

Actually @JC, the real question is why is it that so many people are so concerned about an additional piece of hardware that FCA decided to add in our trucks? Manufacturers do this all the time, especially when they force you to select certain packages that come with a bunch of useless stuff you don’t want just to get the one item that you do want. Is it that in some of the trucks you can see it everyday and it just rubs you wrong knowing that it’s there and you will never use it? I’m not trying to be funny, I’m just curious as to what the rub is.

That's the classic marketing practice, just like your TV cable network..... ex: you're interested on a single premium channel ? OK, but in order to have it: you need to sing up for a package of useless additional channels, that you don't care about it, and will never watch. A single feature by itself will not attract customer(s) as well as if it's offered with an additional bunch of goodies. It gives the buyer more reasons to justify for the purchase.

It’s a waste and where it was in the 2019’s my 2020 has a spot to put my phone. Like I haven’t had a land line in 18 years but every home I get (last was a new co do in 2012) has a phone outlet in every room yet I always have to run cat5 cable to hard wire my electronics to the internet.

I remember those days when my father had one on his car !!
If you were looking for a specific song …..hehee it took forever to find it !!
I’ve got a buddy in the Chicago area that collects and loves 8 track. He plays them all the time, the switching of tracks in the middle of songs doesn’t bother him one bit.

Nice, I'm sure your friend has a hard time to find tapes that still sound half decent, since magnetic tapes do demagnetize in a matter of a few decades, compromising the sound quality.

I have a Technics reel to reel tape player on my living room (2 track RS-1500), it si fully refurbished. ATR and RMG are still manufacturing magnetic blank tapes, for the few of us that love that analogue tape sound.
I have about 5 big size reels that I recorded at home with miscellaneous songs from my vinyl records collection. Once in a while, when have guest over for dinner, I play one of those tapes and it will last close to 2 hours of music.
The younger generation guests have never seen a reel to reel tape player, it's always fun to see their reaction and curiosity. The guest of my age: it almost bring them tears of joy from "long lost memories", when they see the unit playing.

I admit that digital playback music in our days is better than ever, but the reel to reel player is definitely "an entertaining piece of conversation" .
God bless you buddy for keeping up with it.

Nice... My dad had a Sony reel-to-reel when we were kids but for the life of me I can’t ever remember what he did with it. He was in the navy back then so he never had the time to really enjoy using it.

As for my buddy, I think he is more in love with the nostalgia of the format as opposed to the quality of the sound. He’s got a huge collection of the tapes, he said he picks them up at yard sales mostly.

I'll see your Technics and Sony tape machines and raise ya a Philips built in the land of tulips. I got reels with everything from Allen Sherman to the Beach Bums, Deep Purple, Iron Flutterby and... oh, gawd, this is making me feel so old.

I’ve had several 8.4’s and 2 of the 12.9 screens. They’ve all had glitches and FCA works to improve or replace but my opinion is bigger is better. The larger screen offers more options and functionality. The FCA camera is the best !! Amazing clarity and size. I’ve had mine blank out, go green or snowy but it comes back each time. If you stop top consider all the technology installed in the truck it’s pretty amazing from back in the day. It’s the future , embrace it.

I'm with you, but I only embrace stuff that works;)

I have the 8.4 and absolutely love it. a close friend has the 12, and I wouldn't have one in my truck.

I've only had it a few days and not too much driving, but with all the setup and fiddling I've done, I haven't run across any glitches.

I even started my truck from the Uconnect app. The web controls aren't working, nor is health status*, mileage report, etc. but I understand I may have to stand on one foot, bite my tongue, and look at the sun to make that work.

* I've seen mention this wasn't supported but those were old posts. Anyone know if it should work?

It isn't supported so it won't work.. didn't work on the 1500 I traded in either..

After about 5 +/- hours of trying to get the Health report and correct mileage to appear on my app. I come to find out that the 12 inch screen wont allow any of that info to appear on the app. the 8.4 you can have all that but not the 12 inch. Dumb.

From all my research. The answers simple with the 12”. The hardware (processor, memory, etc) is maxed out. The device can’t handle any more software/data that’s currently being pushed through it. No more features coming, just glitch smoothing. That’s why ram (FCA) is going to a fully new android system starting in my 2021 much more expansion capability on the 12”.
I tried switching my ordered ram from the 12” to the 8.4” but the truck was to late in the order process. The 12” won’t be bad, and FCA will still try and smooth out the glitches. Just don’t expect any additional features on it. The hardware can handle it. The 2021 12” coming will be like comparing and iPhone 11 next 2 an iPhone 4.

Very interesting, even if disappointing, information. In the end, I should have gone with my gut, and bought an '18 leftover with 8.4, as most of the new tech stuff in this truck has turned out to be a waste or still not available, and now I'm stuck with the CP4. Live and learn.
