Service coupon? What's the catch?

So I got the service coupon for an oil change emailed to me today and I was wondering if anybody else has gotten one as well. Considering the coupon price is about the same as just the cost of the oil, and substantially lower than others report paying, I'm inclined to use it. It's been about 3 months and 10,000 miles since I picked up the truck so it's getting due pretty quick here.

Just wanted to check if anyone has experiences with them using low quality oil/filters, or if you get there and they say " well actually this will cost xx More than the coupon quotes because..."

Seems reasonable. Valvoline Premium Blue (10w-30, synthetic blend) is $17/gallon. $17x3 + $15 filter would come to $66 in parts and $55 in labor to get to the $120 price they advertise.

I guess I was comparing it to shell t6, which seems to be over $50 a gallon for a consumer to buy

The catch is they want you to come in for service. While dealerships used to make most of their money on car sales now the service department and parts department combined may double what the sales department makes. They are happy to break even on an oil change to either gain you as a regular customer or possibly notice that you need other service work. :)

I don't for one minute mean to say that ALL dealers are like this, but it's heard all too often, a vehicle coming out of a service bay has "new" problems. You're probably safe if you're under warranty unless the dealer is hurting for book hours and most are not.

Buddy of mine swears on a stack of bibles that a dealer shoved a pick into his trans pan gasket to create a leak when it was in for some other unrelated warranty work. His 3rd party wrench confirmed it had been tampered with.

Remember the lube tech is the least experienced tech in the shop. They don't give waiter oil changes to the ASE and Chrysler Certified Master tech. With that said the new kids that do the quick lube are known to cross thread a lugnut now and then, overtighten a drain plug and damage the threads or put the wrong amount of oil in. As far as sabotage I couldn't imagine a tech needing the hours enough to do anything like that. Often you will get a sheet called a 32 point or 120 point inspection with your oil change. They briefly scan the the items that they believe are the quick sell items, air filters, wiper blades, brake flushes and you name it. If a lube tech does an upsell usually that goes to a more competent tech but not always.

I took a Jeep in for an oil change about 1 yr. ago at a stealership. They were shocked when I popped the hood and checked the dipstick when they brought it around. Yep… no oil change!

Who can you trust… very few these days!

IMHO most are honest but expensive. You will find employees that do what is called flat rating (charging for a service not completed) but you can bet that isn't the policy of the dealership. You take a dealership with 5-10 advisors and 10-20 techs and they will gross $500k to $1 million a month out of service. You certainly aren't going to jeopardize that for an oil change or two.

I took a company car in for service a long time ago to a “reputable dealer” that required that the valve cover be removed. When it was done I lifted the hood and the bolts still had the dirt/oil on them…..they could not have done the work. I asked how they did the work without disturbing the dirt and they got real nervous real fast.

My dealer has been OK, but not great.

In any event, check the Mopar site for coupons. A couple of years ago, I used one to buy 3 oil changes for $299. I do my own fuel filters, but that was a good deal on the oil changes.

I also just received Valvoline voucher and valvoline coupon on a website but I am wondering if I should use their service experience or not. because I have never experienced their service to see if the quality of the service and product is good. Everyone who has used Valvoline's service experience, please leave a review about the quality of Valvoline's services and products.
Thank You

Your post seems awful spammy there Aaron. What say you? Are you a bot?

Don't forget, most dealers are buy their oil in bulk so they are not paying what you would pay for oil. They are in it to make money not favors.

For those of you with recently purchased/delivered trucks in the state of Texas, you should receive a service contract for (4) free oil changes and tire rotations direct from FIAT/Chrysler.

EDIT: Apparently this is a Texas only thing....

Correct, there's been discussion of this before. It's buried in the T&C's.

"GENERAL CONDITIONS
The Ram Care Program (the "Plan") is a membership and service program offered by FCA US LLC on certain Ram Brand models sold in the state of Texas. "

LOL, not only is he not a BOT, he's dumb enough to come back and try to edit his post to include a link.

Bye spammer, bye.
