Dreaded DEF system issue... you're screwed in xxx miles

"Though I think it seems to disable itself after some drive time, do you know if fast idle is considered idle?

I'm not sure how the sentence structure is not clear.

The High (fast) idle feature on my truck is disabled after some drive time and cannot be engaged.
I didn't mean to imply the sentence structure was unclear, it's an issue on my end.
Edit: duh... Now I get what you were saying.

Though I think it seems to disable itself after some drive time, do you know if fast idle is considered idle? I seem to recall something along the lines of, "if it's idling in park. it's considered idle." What about "idling" in neutral?

I can see it now, someone gets pulled over...

Officer: Please shut off your engine.
Driver: I can't my truck will go into limp mode.
Officer: Sir, step out of the truck. (turns off body cam.)
... "Who you calling limp ****?"
I’m not sure if anything changed for 2019+, but I’ve witnessed the idle hours change when in park with high idle on a 2018. I’m not sure about neutral, but I think the idle hours only count in park.

Thats odd i have never had an instance where i cant run fast idle even after a 5hr non stop trip, i wonder what triggers it for you to not allow it

Unplugging the speedometer from the sensor at the transmission might also work to stop the countdown.
But the emergency/ first responder calibration, to get that I would be willing to pay some good money.
OEM tune, clean exhaust and no risk of limp mode that would be a dream come true.

The speed is not obtained from a sensor at the transmission. The speed is determined from the 4 wheel speed sensors for the abs module.

How about taking the ABS fuse out then during dératé event?

I had a Def problem on my 14 . Said it was derating in X number of miles which were not enough to get home on . Got out my code reader and was able to clear it and it never came back . Lucky I guess . Kinda like American Express . Don't leave home without it !

Because you did not say you have one, I am thinking you do not use a security bypass cable?

This part of the topic has been sort of a frustrating point for me. In this and other threads it has been said numerous times by reliable sources that... #1: You can not clear any codes without a security gateway bypass cable. And #2: Once a code like this has occurred, the only way for it to be cleared is a trip to the dealer to fix the issue that caused it.

But the frustrating part is that you and others have posted real life experience that seems to go against points one and two.

I have read a few people say that they have cleared seeming major errors and either not had them come back or if they did come back after some miles, the mileage countdown has been reset. As far as clearing codes in general, many have posted that they have done it without a security gateway bypass. And Banks Engineering insists that they do it on the 2019-2021 Rams every day.

I can't say what is accurate as fortunately I have no real-world experience with this that I can be certain about thus far. But it sure is frustrating trying to ascertain what the viable options might be if it did happen!

Is it possible he was able to clear the code b/c it was a 2014 truck? I'd assume the older technology might be the difference. just a thought.

Security Gateway was added in MY2018 trucks. TYpe of code reader/Clearer could also make a difference. I would imagine a $5k Snapon would have more features/Power than a $10 Amazon Special.

As posted, a distinction needs to be made for MY of truck. The SGW was added in 2018 and I think 2019+ trucks are slightly different in some manner as the cables appear to be different (at least KAOdTECH are). Maybe it's just the connector clip.

Yeah. Sorry. I missed his was 2014.

What is the typical mileage Ram gives you with an emissions failure before limp mode on a diesel? Does it depend on what failure it is?

I have seen many posts where 100 miles was stated. And maybe even one at 150 miles. So maybe it depends on MY and or type of error?
I dont know i was told they were all the same milage but that s from the dealer who will tell anyone anything so take it with a grain of sand lol

I guess 200 miles is enough to (hopefully) get to a town with a dealer at it. Still sucks though.

I cleared 2 codes related to the throttle connection on my brand new 2022 with my ScanGauge2. It was a little akward...they didn't just clear...I got a "no response" until I started the truck and then shut it off.....after shutting it down with the ScanGauge still connected, it cleared them right out.

Regarding the DEF sensor....I will always attempt to keep extra DEF in the truck with me now......jeez.
