CP4 recall thread (merged threads) - Y78 Jan 2022 recall campaign - Parts Available May 10 for 2020 trucks only

My service writer, a couple of weeks ago, noted that there was a recall on my pump. I never asked about it, she just noted it in the paperwork before I approved the oil change (Cost). She told me about it, and that no parts where available. This was before Jan 1. FCA will get to them in their own time, at least if it fails, there won't be claims of fuel contamination, its already approved and the pump will be the the latest version.

Agree. Having to prove your innocence takes more effort then Ram acknowledging it.

Just had my CP4 grenade and destroy my fuel system. 800 miles from the house on the way to family for Christmas. 20k on the truck, 2019 3500 Dually. I read about the possibility before my trip and took it to the RAM dealership. They stated they knew about the problem, but had no parts. Now they are spending $15k+ to repair my whole fuel system including replacing all injectors, pump, and dropping the tank and cleaning. FYI stock HO I6, no performance parts, only hauling about 5k on a bumper pull. No warning, just died on the freeway. RAM has been pretty good about it though.

Any type of warning, miss-fires etc or just dropped dead?

Atleast you should have the new pump when you get it back!

Wow, the rumors are true.

@RamCares Great on Ram to step up on this recall and thanks for taking all the grief from everyone. I think everyone that bad-mouthed the team and RAM over the CP4 issue should be eating a little crow right now.

People complain a lot, but Kudos to Ram for making things right. Between this recall and the HVAC tsb, they have set themselves apart from the others in my humble opinion.

I don't know that I think it's quite that simple. It wasn't that Ram just stepped up out of the goodness of their own heart, the NHTSA did get involved here. Would Ram have "done the right thing" anyway? We will never know. Did Ram go the extra mile by refunding a user for fixing the recalled item out of pocket? Not really considering that the NHTSA and DOT passed a law requiring reimbursement for a safety related recall if the customer paid out of pocket (source).

While I'm never one to suggest treating others like trash, we are all humans after all, I don't see that Ram went above and beyond here. They did what is/was required of them, by law. That is not to say I don't appreciate it (I do), that is not to say that they didn't do better than other manufactures (I think they did), it's just to say that Ram did what was legally required. I'm glad they did it when they did, and I'm glad that they seem to be reimbursing people in an efficient manner.

very surprising and I was definitely wrong in predicting they would not do this

I thought Ram had this in the works prior to the NHTSA. just didn't have the recall design yet.

Ram was already in the works with this before NHTSA came out with any kind of a notice. I had no doubt they would take care of it especially after RamCares publicly announced here last year a fix was in the works! Typical of forums, folks get on here with no factual information other than there have been some failures, and then all the rumors of I was told this, someone on facebook said this, this is "widespread" etc., etc. In the end there have been approximately 4% failures out of 222,000 plus trucks per Ram and NHTSA. It was the same gloom and doom on the EcoDiesel site when I had my 2014, never had an issue with the truck, but yes some did. Bottom line anything can break on our vehicles!

I am wondering if that means we can just go do a CP3 replacement on our own rather than waiting for dealer parts that could take months... Not sure if it would impact warranty at that point.

That means approximately 8,890 2019-2020 trucks have experienced CP4 failures resulting in a contaminated fuel system. That’s a big number even if 4% sounds minor.

That’s what I did. Warranty for the fuel system is most likely voided though.

Ram had mentioned that they had a "service solution" before the NHTSA word came through, for sure. That said, who knows how long it would have taken to roll out or what the plan was at the time. Perhaps Ram worked with the NHTSA to push for the safety recall for legal reasons. We will never know. What I do know, is that I've got very little faith that any company is going to expel tons of cash in the interest of "making it right" for their customers. I could be wrong, jaded perhaps, but no one can know for sure except those that work directly at Ram and they aren't going to share that information publicly.

The whole "anything can break" isn't a valid excuse in my book. Yes, things break and need repairs, but this was a pretty catastrophic issue if it happened to your truck. Either way, I'm glad that Ram is fixing the issue, by choice or force, for all of us owners. That makes me feel much much better about my purchase.
