3500 Ram Laramie 29 LTD Classic help

Also what’s your antenna situation?

Hey sorry I missed this. I was looking into a LIL Will antenna however I am currently running a Power load 3500 W 10 gauge 10 played in copper 48 inch antenna.

I am thinking about trying to find a long whip that would perform really well in a mountainous environment.

Recommendations?

Oh no haha I’m just a novice. Can’t make recommendations. Lol

Always curious to know what people do how they mount and all.

Technically no.

I have ran a cb in a couple trucks and I have a base setup. But my current 5th gen ram has a dual band ham radio and a scanner installed.

I have an 11m I plan on installing but it’s on a long list of projects that never gets shorter and it is low in priority

I work white collar and my truck is mostly for weekend warrior and tow needs. But my towing is usually local so I really don’t have a need for 11m like you. I am a nerd, old farm kid, and have a trucker as a father. So the radio is just an interest/hobby. So that means it hasn’t had priority and given time for the install. Working 6 days a week and having a toddler well you probably get the picture ha.

Good Lawdy man.... Your workn over time! God bless ya!!!

I (me) look at CB’s as a need.

Here is why? Being overseas you have redundancy in comms. On multiple occasions primary comms goes down and you have a alternate we were able to use IOT get ahold of whomever maybe ministering a net.

I realize, I’m in the states and there is nothing like the issues faced there however, when your out of Cell range/ service during work or on a fam trip it is nice to have another form of comms your able to reach out for assistance if needed.

I usually monitor the radio because I’m nosy and it’s fun.

I have only ever HAD to use my CB once and that was out at a tear range in White Sands Missile Range, NM about 9 years ago. If folks have ever been out there, there is nothing around for MIIIIIIIILES...

I was able to reach out to a Trucker that was coming through the area who gave me a lift to a gas station for a tire plug kit. I had some dumb luck and picked a screw in one tire and and a nail in the other. Both were rear tires

I swore that day, I would never not have it in the truck for just in case purposes....

Here is a good forum to take a look at: https://www.classadrivers.com/forum/new-truck-drivers-get-help-here/34468-cb-antennas-coax.html

I’m currently residing about 35 miles north of Fort Benning Ga where I retired in 2017.

Where are you?

Respectfully
Chris

Man that’s a good story. I understand those moments can really solidify what needs kept.

I occasionally pull a couple antique tractors so even though I haven’t needed it, I keep a battery impact, wood, and an extreme overkill bottle jack. If I gotta slap a tire on remote then I should be able to.

Especially working in IT we survive by redundancy but the truth is leaving the house with a cell is a modern expectation that full communication is there all the time but nothing is guaranteed. I know my wife will have a toddler like fit if she can’t get a hold of me if I’m out and I just come home. All I can do is politely reminder her that 20 years ago that would have been the norm.

Ok all... I had to rethink how I was going about this 29 LTD CLASSIC CB... What I was doing we completely over thinking everything.

Way to robust and heavy!

I went back to the drawing board and thought about “K.I.S.S.”. If you know what “K.I.S.S.” stands for you know.

Keep It Simple Stupid!

1: I went and bought 1/8”x1-1/4”x3’ flat aluminum bar.

717a923bf3cfd1e57a2933f5c6b970cb.jpg

2: Mounted it to the plastic trip (wood look) area on my dash that typically houses pocket garbage and cigarette lighter port.

Aluminum bar mounted to the trim with two 16 pound command strips.

Remember if you do this to wipe down both mounting surfaces extremely well IOT make the command strip adhere extremely well.

30-45 minutes later:

I mounted the OEM 29 LTD Classic mounting bracket to the aluminum bar with 16 lbs. command strips. This turned out to be extremely stable and acts a shock absorbers. :)

After letting the mount sit attached to the aluminum bar (with weight), the built up command strips so they were roughly 1/4” thick. I then attached one side to the plastic (wood grain looking) trim then removed the adhesive strip on the left side of the 29 LTD Classic radio and mounted the entire radio on the bracket and Command Strips.

I am making a run to Dahlonega Ga. Camp Merrill (5th Ranger Training Battalion) this week. I leave on 03 January 0430, 2022 and return 07 January 1800, 2022.

I will update this thread on how this setup worked/ preformed during that trip.

Have a wonderful evening!

Note: Maybe command strips are the ticket for a non permanent mounting solution.... I have no clue.... we will see!

Great info here! I wouldn’t mind having one in my truck, have CB on my Harley, and I use it all the time.

Here's a mount that fits in the Ram tray above the radio.

I’ll certainly take a look at it.

Does anybody know if there’s a way to add a short video clip to this form? I just got done taking a really short video clip of this classic mounted to my truck as I’m hauling down the road so that folks can see that it’s doing just fine and he’s not moving and he’s pretty stable.

Impressive. Them things weigh a ton compared to a ham rig. Partly why I wavered in putting in my 11m

Thanks for posting all the details. IDK about videos. Could try YouTube if you have an account.

Now that I know this works well in this configuration. Now I need to figure out out to set it back further on the dash without messing up the Dash.

I am currently up in Dahlonega Ga on a work trip, then heading to Ft. Campbell Ky. I drive home on the 16th or January then fly out to LV for the Shot Show. I return from the Shot Show on the 20th of Jan 2022.
I’ll work a radio mount config over that weekend and repost.

Here is the only con I have so far to this configuration you see in photos above.

The left corner of the CB and mic cable are far to close to the column shifter.

Good mid morning all. I must say, thinking out of the box and creating something that looks good and is functional is a blast.

Ok, so I repurposed some things and added aluminum trim. You will see in photos.

Cut out a template from the rubber insert. You will need to shave it down roughly 1/8” all the way around.

Above- I was planning on using OEM screws shown in 2 pics above however after thinking, in keeping with my original thought, I want this completely removable.

I coated the entire mount with Spray in bed liner as I liked the rough texture it provided.

I will make another adjustment to this mount when I get home. I had some time and so to not get in trouble, I thought I’d continue with this creation.:)

8eb3dc6d973c9d1a0b0f86a965869cba.jpg

After the bed liner is applied and dried, here is what it looks like. The base (template that was cut to fit and is attached to the aluminum uprights with JB weld.

There is a peace of aluminum bar stock That’s JB welded to the uprights the radio mount is a fixed to...

The radio mount is attached to this mount using 16 lbs. retention command strips.

Here is the finished project (for now).

Put spacers under your plate in those indentations or you will eventually pull the nutclips right out of the plastic and/or the plastic will deform under the radio bezel.

I only have a RAM mount setup with a plate and 2 short ball arms and my cellphone and it did this. You're going to have just as much leverage on there with a large semi-heavy radio like that LTD.

That said, part of the deformation could have been the dealer monkey over tightening the screws when they pulled the dash to do the AC recall.

Oh man, this is a fantastic suggestion. I forgot to take the photo of the OEM screws I took out for the mock up and put back in the holes you circled above.

I will go in and fill those indents as you suggested with calking maybe. It will only strengthen the mount base.

I decided to not use the ORM screws to hold the fabricated base down and only wanted to have it held down by the command strips so I placed the OEM screws back where they were.

Ah. I misread that you attached the mount to the dash with something other than the screws.

Also keep in mind that in the event of a crash, that thing is likely to be a projectile in the cab if it's not super securely attached... Just saying.
