I’ve always pre filled my oil filters in every other truck I’ve ever owned but seeing how the filter on the 6.4 is horizontal how does one manage to do that with making a huge mess? Are y’all pre filling?

I’ve never pre-filled an oil filter on the many vehicles I’ve owned, and honestly I’ve never heard of that being done before. Lots of modern vehicles have the filter top mounted vertically so that the oil drains out when the engine is shut off. I don’t think you need to worry about it.

I’ve always been told a empty filter will cause a dry start. But it really is impossible the way they have some of these filters sitting

I'm assuming it's like the older 6.4L then you can still fill it fairly full. The filter itself will soak up some of the oil if you let it sit for a bit, I usually fill it 1/2 - 3/4 and quickly throw it on there, minimal mess usually.

I'm surprised this thread is so short. The oil filter priming debate typically runs days and days. ;)

If you want a debate we could always start discussing oil brands or weight! Intervals?

How about tire rotation? :D

The oil weight discussions especially crack me up. Ram highly recommends the weights specified to make the variable lifters in the MDS system work correctly. I always wonder how messing around with the oil viscosity might screw up performance. :)
