Gas Tank Size ?

I have a strange question concerning gas tank size. Normally, I get about 15 MPG according to the truck and hand calculated is pretty close to what the truck says. Supposedly my truck has a 31 gallon gas tank. My gas light usually comes on when it says I have about 56 miles left. However, it never takes more than 23-24 gallons to fill it. I find it hard to believe I still have about 7 gallons in the tank when it says I only have about 50-60 miles left. I should really only have about 3 gallons or so left.

Anyways, anyone else notice that kind of disparity? It just makes you question the actual tank size or have they somehow programmed it intentionally to try and ensure you don't run out of gas.
 
Mine takes about 27 gallons or so when my range switches to low. I thought I might be able to fix it with AlfaOBD, but the empty settings are already at the minimums. It's bad enough to have a just 31 gallon tank for this thirsty engine, but you can't even get that. I really wish somebody would come out with an aftermarket tank, I'd be all over it. For me, this is by far the worst attribute of this truck.
 
I agree the tank is too small. the only way to really know how much fuel you can get in is to run it out of gas. I have put in close to 28 gallons and was worried I would run out. One day i am going to carry a 5 gallon can of gas and run it completely empty and see how much I can get in. it would be so nice to have at least a 38-40 gallon tank.
 
My low fuel light goes on at 1/4 tank exactly every time. The smaller tank does suck. I have to bring extra gas when pulling my camper on holiday's because it's 257 miles between gas stations for a part of my trip.

I used to do that with my gassers not doing it with my diesels though lol
 
Titan Fuel Tanks makes a 52 gallon replacement for 2013 - 2021 2500 & 3500 Diesels. Here is a link to their website and the tank: Titan Replacement Tank Read carefully....it is only for CC, SWB and 4X4's ONLY. I had one of their 56 gallon replacements in my RAM 3500 and loved, loved, loved the extended range and piece of mind. I will be putting one in the new truck when I get it.

Unfortunately it is only for trucks with the Cummins as well.

I am sure they do. It is just weird the truck will say I only have 56 miles to empty which is about 4 gallons but ehen i fill it, it comes out to ehere i have about 7 gallons left. You would think it would be more accurate
 
According to the owner's manual, the low fuel warning light should illuminate when you have approximately 3.2 gallons left. Mine also illuminates around 1/4 tank.
 
I think the max I’ve gotten on a fill up was like 27 gallons, and it when was reading like 10 miles left. 2019 hemi 6.4 short bed

Apparently the 2022 has the same issue. Mine said 15 miles left. 31 gallon tank and the most I could cram in it was 26.5 gallons. That leaves nearly 5 gallons reserve
 
Does the in-tank pump take up some of the volume? Sure it is a 31 gallon tank, but with 60 miles left at 15mpg you should have 4 gallons in there. You put 24 gallons. That's 28 gal total. Mybe the pump and lines inside the tank are taking up some of that volume? I know gallons is a lot of volume, but that's where some more miscalculations could be.

They have a built in safety net the pump may take up 1/2 a gallon of room but that should be included in the 31 gal calculation

This is the same on the 2022 manual. Mine 2022 light comes on a touch lower than 1/4 tank. If it truly is a 31 gallon tank than 1/4 is 7.75 gallons a over double what the light should come on at. I never took notice to what the estimated remaining mileage was or how much it took to fill although I was just thinking the other day I should take a look next time.

My 19 will change depending what the AVG milage is at right now my AVG is 10.2 from lots of plowing and idle time so it comes on at slightly over 1/4 tank but in the summer when its at AVG of 18-19 i get the light at around 1/8 of a tank so i think it mainly goes by the DTE reading that comes from the AVG
