We successfully made the drive from Houston to Oregon in the new Ram. A nice young lady from Mark Dodge was waiting with the truck directly outside the Houston Airport baggage claim as we walked out. 3 signatures and we were off. She bid us safe travels and went into the airport.
Now that we’ve put 3,347 miles on the truck, here’s some things I can say about it.
Pros:
-Very Quiet truck all around.
-Aisin shifting is vastly improved compared to our 2013 CCLB 6.7l 68rfe that banged and hunted non stop from day 1.
-12” UC5 worked surprisingly well with the latest B.5 update and only ONE phone connected. (More on this later)
-Comfy seats. Spent 5 days and 3300 miles straight in em, and my rear wasn’t sore. Our 2013 bighorn 2500 with cloth seats would make us sore after a day or two. These new ones are great without needing em broke in.
-Fit & finish was great. No rattles or sloppy build quality, even on those notorious Texas country roads
-Dynamic (moving) headlights (Limited). Whichever way you turn, that individual side headlight turns outward with you, along with that side’s fog light turning on individually, even with the brights on. Winding mountain roads were much easier at night now.
-Lane assist was subtle but worked well.
-Adaptive cruise handled most situations well. It definitely needs refined, as it brakes and accelerates a little harsh at times. Reminded me of a teenage driver. On the open road it made life much easier while following a semi on single lane hwy, or general flow of the interstate. The biggest gap setting is surprisingly large, so you don’t bother people ahead.
-Auto high beams are pretty good and snappy most of the time. I only used em in rural areas, as urban lights freaked em out at times.
-HVAC fan way stronger than our 2013.
-50 gallon tank is a game changer. Averaged 955 miles of range per tank. After the pump clicks u can add an extra gallon real easy. The truck was basically empty when we got it at the airport, and with 10 miles til empty I put 49.4 gallons in it.
Cons:
-Small DEF tank. When the def countdown to 5 mph was at 132 miles left, I could only put 4 gallons in.
-UC5 freezing, crashing, shutting off when 2 phones connected to it on Bluetooth at same time, especially if you try Apple CarPlay. Keep only one phone connected and it never even hiccuped.
-Ride quality. Yes we went with a 3500 w/o bags to tow our farm equipment. It’s not a deal to us that it’s a bouncy rough son of a gun. I just want anyone considering a 3500 w/o factory airbags that isn’t gonna tow, this thing is ROUGH to ride in. Not many babies will sleep while riding with this suspension setup.
Overall we consider the truck a keeper.
