I have my 2021 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi in the shop. It has less than 5000 miles on it. I put it in for a rough idle, backfires at times when starting, and poor fuel economy. The dealer called me yesterday and said they believe they have found the problem. They found a Star case with a similar problem. They are saying that they may have to replace the camshaft and lifters or the engine if they find metal shavings in the oil. Has anyone else had or heard of this problem with such low miles? This is actually my second one of these trucks this year. The first one lasted six days before a 18 wheeler came into my lane and hit me head on at 70 miles per hour.

No issues with my 2019 when I had it, but DANG!...Glad you're still around after that head on!

Thanks. It was a heck of a ride. My truck skidded on it's side down the highway and then rolled three times. I know anything can happen with these vehicles but possibly needing a motor with less than 5000 miles.

I believe the "Hemi Tick" is a well documented problem with the 5.7 and 6.4s. I have read of several camshaft failures in which the owners had to replace all lifters and the cam.

Wow... Im going to have to keep an eye on this. Seems odd that this would happen on such liw miles... or at all.

Wow, sounds like an anomaly. Hopefully you have your truck back soon.

sounds like it wiped the cam. once that happens, it usually means some r&r upcoming.

It can happen. Way back when I had my 96 Trans AM WS6, it had to have a full engine replacement at 14,000 miles, bad main bearing

I thought about going the route to try and get a new truck from Chrysler. They would laugh in my face. I spent over 30 years in dealership fixed operations. I am a retired general motors and dodge parts manager. I know they would refuse. I am going to let them put the motor in it. I may trade it in after that. What dealers are paying for used vehicles right know is insane. I might even make money off the deal. The dealer is being great about this problem. I feel comfortable with their repairs. Some dealers could care less. It's just that when you replace a major component like a engine it's never the same as when the factory does it.

Totally agree with your last post. I would feel a lot more comfy with a whole complete engine rather than some monkey's taking apart my engine and counting on them to properly put it back together. Trade route is a great option right now with the prices they are giving for used stuff

Just back from the dealership. It's going to be a new long block. A foot note also states with catastrophic failure to replace the intake manifold. I spoke with the Parts Manager and he said there are no engines available. I am about to call Ram Customer Service and speak with them.

Keyword here is catastrophic failure meaning internal failure such as a broken rod which resulted in a hole in the side of the block. In your case the engine still ran fine so the chances of metal or debris entering the intake tract are near 0. When you break a rod or snap a timing chain its common for metal fragments to go through your intake valves into the manifold. As stated above this did not occur on yours. If you can get a new IM then thats great but there is no need for it. Also, any competent mechanic will inspect the throttle body and IM before installing on the new engine.

I hope RAM takes care of you on this and gets you up and running fast. If there are no engines available there isnt much they can do but they should at least but you in loaner truck until the issue is fixed.

Obviously a totally different vehicle and engine, but my wife's Fiat 500 recently had something come apart or break inside the engine which caused one cylinder to quit firing. Engine still ran, and there was no knocking, but one of the cylinders had no compression, which most likely meant something in the valve train let go. Neither the oil or the coolant were contaminated.
They never even took the valve cover off to find the issue. They just installed a new long block under warranty.

Hi JALOPYJUNK,
We're sorry to hear your dealer is struggling to get the necessary parts for repair. We'd be happy to provide an additional layer of assistance alongside them. Feel free to send us a PM!
