Tool Boxes?

I am thinking about tool box options, I bought the side swing out tool box that mounts inside your bed but it broke on me after about a month. Note you cannot put much weight in those things. I really liked the idea of it but it is just not strong enough to hold what I want. I have a tri fold bed cover, and like having one for when I get groceries and such. What has everyone done as far as tool boxes? I have seen bed covers that fold from the cab forward to allow access to small tool boxes but I am not sure the best route to go.

I prefer good old cross rail boxes

I considered a small matte black one, but then the issue of having a tonneau cover. I think they might make a cover that works with toolboxes but I am not sure how well they seal up.

They seal up pretty good….

I’m using a weatherguard toolbox and the extang trifecta 2.0 toolbox cover, the only place the water gets in a little is between the box and the front of the bed, I’m sure I could seal it up but I haven’t had time to look into it.C84D7C1A-C03A-49A1-9CD0-1AEC00E605E2.jpeg

What is the width on that? It looks like it would fit nicely between my Rambox's! I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to setup my bed being that it is more narrow due to the Rambox

Thanks!
Sorry for the delay. I have been out of town. It measures 46 1/4" across the bottom. Part # 674-52-01

Looking for options for a megacab as well. Trying to decide between Rambox and factory hitch.

Will be pulling goosenecks for sure. Perhaps a fifth wheel at some point.

The puck system of the factory hitch sure does take up a lot of bed space compared to the Ford, or B&W option. Have thought about B&W turnoverball, but then the question is what 5th wheels work with the short bed. Have read some hitches require factory hitch vs B&W.

Would also like a place for a chainsaw, which Rambox wouldn't have, along with an extra fuel tank.

Would be storing a bunch of tools for working on equipment as well. Have seen some Rimrock toolboxes that seem nice, but it seems that that would limit me to using a gooseneck converter for a fifth wheel.

Have a B&W companion hitch now.

Looking for suggestions. Am not interested in a flatbed or mechanics body.

Have a box similar to the one pictured above on one truck, but dont like how hard it is to get to for most things. Might be okay for a partial solution along with Rambox, but want something better this time than just that.

As someone who has the Rambox and loves it and would never want to give it up- if I were in your shoes I'd go for an 8' bed with a 50 gallon fuel tank and some sort of traditional tool box. Also get a bed step.

Edit: missed the mega cab part of your post. That makes it hard. If you're a little crazy, you can get a customized long bed on a mega cab. I saw my first one in the wild not long ago.

Yeah, not going for the custom crazy cruiser. Have to have a megacab, which puts me in this quandary. Would use extra fuel tank for filling equipment moreso than for this truck.

Your bedstep comment reminds me of the other dilemma, wheel to wheel side steps vs power cab length. If I get Ramboxes, I feel wheel to wheel is less necessary. If traditional bed, then with .ore traditional toolbox, it seems I would need them more.

Need to find wrench and socket storage options for Rambox. Any suggestions?

I have the megacab with Ramboxes, power sidesteps, and the bed step. I like the power sidesteps and have never wished for longer ones. I just get in the bed when I need something from the front of the bed and the bed step is really helpful in that regard.

As far as tools like sockets, I like to get small individual sets and keep them in a tool bag. I recommend buying or making a set of dividers for your Rambox. It will really maximize your storage. I also made it a point with this truck to put all my tools and junk on the passengers side and keep the driver's side Rambox mostly open to use like a car trunk for short term storage. I never realized how much junk I had in my 1500's Ramboxes until I had to empty them and that was with a shorter box than on the 2500.

Good thoughts. Thanks. Do you pull any gooseneck or fifth wheels? Which hitch did you go with if you do?

I don't and it's not something I plan to so I've never looked into it. From what I've glanced it sounds like it can be done with the right hitch but it's a bit tricky.

I wish there was a roll up option you could use with a toolbox I'd be all over it. BAKFlip used to make one but they no longer do. You could always do an "under the rails" toolbox, and there are many options, but you end up having to completely roll up the tonneau to gain access, which is a serious bummer.

With the megacab you have to choose how you will use the precious space if you are pulling a 5th wheel. My Demco slider has about 16” (maybe 18”, I’m going from memory) of clearance to the front of the bed. You can and should install a 50 gallon Titan tank in place of the OEM.
