Tow/Haul Button and Check Engine Light

Hi folks,

First time post. I purchased a 2019 2500 4x4 with 6.4L engine back in May 2021. It had under 43000 miles and since then, I've put about 8,000 miles on it. I've pulled a 30' travel trailer around Texas without issue. In fact, the truck drives well with or without the trailer and I have been using the tow/haul button without any issue.

We left for Colorado last week (from east Texas) with the RV and had no issues until just 5 miles outside of Golden where we were going to camp. The check engine light came on. I had been monitoring the gauges and there had been no significant change in temps/pressures. My first thought was altitude issues but that the computer should've been adjusting for that.

After dropping off the RV, I drove to OReilly's to get the code read but it seemed that the tranny was shifting a little sluggish. The code was P219B (bank 2 air-to-fuel ratio). I took it to the Dodge house the next morning but they were swamped and couldn't do much other than verify the code. So far each Dodge house I call seems to be booked out for 1-2 weeks.

That's the backstory. I've had the CEL come on 3 times. When this happens, the tranny seems to hold the gear too long either going up or down. In fact, one time I tried to pass a vehicle downhill and the truck would not shift from 3rd gear. I could not pass without getting into some high RPMs. Basically there is something wrong/different after the CEL. Each time I have cleared it and shut the truck down for 10-30 minutes. Sometimes it will drive better; sometimes not.

After it cools down or overnight, it drives better.

When I am NOT towing, the truck drives like a dream (other than the trip to OReilly's). No issues. Great gas mileage. Smooth shifting.

I have now started to tow without the Tow/Haul button. So far, no issues. I cannot guarantee that the CEL is related to the Tow/Haul, but it sure seems like it. I've never had a truck with "limp home mode" before so I can't really say if that is the reason for the sluggish feeling in the tranny.

Asking for advice since I have been unable to find a dealership or independent mechanic who isn't overbooked. We still have more of this trip to go before we head home. I'd like to get this fixed or some advice on what to do.

Thanks in advance.
Bruce

I assume you already checked your air filter, but if not, that is the first thing I'd take a look at. O2 sensors would also be logical based on the fault, but that seems really early to have an issue unless it just happened to be a faulty sensor.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I should’ve included this information. Prior to the trip I replaced the air filter, serviced the truck and added a can of B12. I’ve since checked to make sure the air box is screwed down properly.
O2 sensors would be based on that fault or even bad injector or fuel filter, my confusion is that the truck runs fine when not in tow/haul.
I’m wondering if there is a software issue.

Did you replace the filter with a stock air filter? I know some have thrown codes by using an off-brand filter in the housing. I am not sure if it was the diesel or gas guys though. There was a thread here.

Not stock. Fram.

Ugh.

Fram anything pretty much sucks. Especially the oil filters.

Get an OEM air filter. It will flow better and trap more than anything aftermarket.

Can't say for sure on the Hemi, but this HAS been an issue for Diesel trucks running aftermarket systems.

Thanks. I will try anything at this point. An air filter is a cheap fix

Finally found a dealership who could squeeze me in. The codes did not store but he saw the the PCM needed an update. So he reflashed it. Hopefully this will take care of my issue.

Worse thing you can do is keep clearing codes if you are having a shop look at it

Hello, I started this thread last August during our trip to Colorado. After the reflash (see above) I only had the check engine light come on once more in New Mexico but the truck did not go into Limp Home Mode. Got home in September and never had a problem. No check engine lights. No nothing. Talked to my local dealership about it but it was all theory and what ifs since it hasn't thrown the code since.

Fast forward to today one year later. Once again I’m 5 miles from Golden, Colorado and my check engine light comes on. Reader is the same as before P219B (air/fuel imbalance) I’ve already been through Raton Pass at 7850ft this morning and I’m lower than that now at about 5900 feet. This time it did not go into limp home mode. This morning in Raton I installed a brand new MOPAR air filter and I put fuel injector cleaner in the tank when we left Monday. All of the dashboard temps look good. I was NOT in tow/haul mode this time. I've got 74,000 miles on it now (51k last year).

The obvious answer is to never come to Colorado in this truck again..... I called the Ram dealership nearby and they're 2 weeks out and like last year, I feel like that is going to be the case with every dealership I call. I'm stumped. It's obvious to me that the sensors think they're back in Texas and they're not sensing enough oxygen. Any more thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Was it raining by any chance?

The 1500 crew have some TSB/warranty extension thing going on with the active air dam throwing codes due to malfunction.

Nope. This time it was clear and 93° last time it was clear and 104°.

Did it happen before the injector cleaner or after? I have seen some of those “cleaners” cause trucks to throw codes before until the next tank of fuel

After. I put the Lucas injector cleaner in Texas about 1,000 miles and 7 tanks ago.

So, before I posted I did a search and here I am.

Driving back to FL from OR and was getting gas in Wyoming (yesterday) and the pump was slow AF... so slow that it overfilled the tank and was spilled some out of the tank before I could stop it. Anyway, got a bit down the road and the MIL came on.... figured it was because the gas overflowed and drove the rest of the way into Western NE.

Drove today to almost the eastern end of NE and the MIL is still on so I pulled the code and it is P21B (air/fuel imbalance), OBD reader states:

Control Unit: Engine Control Unit
Status: Permanent
Mixture Control, Bank 2 - valve out of range

All the other numbers on the engine look fine, no weird noises and engine feels/sounds like it is running fine (considering we are pulling our TT home).

I'll get some fuel injector cleaner at gas station in the morning and run it to see if it will clear the code.
Still have 5 more days before I can get back home...

So... picked up a big bottle of injector cleaner/whatever at the truck stop.
I did not use Tow/Haul mode today at all and I ran three tanks of gas with the cleaner and now the MLE is off.

Will still be taking it to the dealer once I get back home.

Otherwise the truck runs great... 30+ mph headwinds *suuuuuck*.
