Why do you have 3.73 or 4.10?

I know, another thread on this. But I was actually curious about another thing since people say there is not much difference. Do most of you with 3.73's have them because that is what came with the truck you bought off of the lot? Seems like most I have seen on lots have 3.73. And those with 4.10's have them because you ordered them?

This has been beat to death and I will be scorned for my reply but it is what it is. I ordered my loaded up Big Horn with 3.73's to get the best mileage I could out of the truck. It will haul and tow whatever I throw at it in my little world. It is what I wanted and I'm happy with my decision.

I ordered my 2500 Hemi with the 4.10 gears, I wanted to be able to handle all my trailers at their max weight rating if needed. My max towing is 16,268lbs.

It was on the lot with 3.73, it checked every other box though. I studied the tow charts (older 6 speed vs 8 speed) the 3.73 8 speed and the 4.10 6 speed are pretty close.
With that said, if you are towing less than 12k or not going any bigger than 35” tires the 3.73 vs 4.10 is negligible. If I had a choice however 4.10 all the way!

The truck is the DD when the weather is crap and I can't ride the bike...and the tow capacity of the 3.73 is well over what I ever plan on towing.
FWIW, I had a 2019 Limited 1500 with 3.92 and the mileage sucked... 3.73 IU have now is at least 2-45 mpg better.
I highly skeptical of those that claim they are getting the same mileage on 4.10s as the 3.73

Im highly skeptical you have a heavy duty 2500 truck with a 6.4 and 3.73s that gets better mpg than a 5.7 half ton and 3.92s.

I traded in a 2019 1500 w/3.92s, on my trip from Michigan to Florida I averaged 21mpg, the best I have seen so far on my 2500 6.4 w/4.10s is 15mpg....

I believe it!

I drove a 2019 1500 with 3.92s as a work truck for almost a year. It was awesome. Got great mpg (relatively), had awesome power, and was VERY plush. That half ton is a great truck!

I also owned a 2016 cummins 2500 that drove around like a dump truck with mediocre mpg, laggy powerband, and dissapointing brakes. DD'ing that truck would have been awful, although it towed our 14k 5er VERY well.

I think if you’re not pushing the limits, either gear set will treat you well. We are kinda splitting hairs here, if you were getting serious, look at the gear ratios on the 4500/5500. It’s all about the GVCW. If you have 3.73 you give up 2500lbs compared to the 4.10

This does seem like splitting hairs, but I totally get it. These trucks are very expensive and I would bet a lot of people are like me and want to make sure they make the right decision. These forums are really a great source of information that you cannot get from salespeople. I just ordered a Hemi with the 4.10 and that was really the only option I was not 100% certain on. Hopefully I am not going to spend the next couple of months wondering if I made the right call, but I think it will be fine, as it seems like you can't go wrong either way. I am sure once I get the truck, I will love it and forget all about that anyways!

True that, you came to the right place for information and first hand experience.
Thank you for starting the thread, it’s always good to get an informative conversation going about our trucks:)
I enjoy reading other members experiences and assessments (and giving my .02 occasionally)
I am sure you made the right choice and your new truck should treat you well for many years to come.

I went with the 4:10s on my 3500 hemi because my truck is not a daily driver and will mostly be used to haul my 3000lb cab over camper. I’ve had it a little over a month and I’m averaging 13.9 mpg unloaded highway (measured; EVIC says 15.3 LOL) and about 12 mpg in town. If I can get anywhere close to 9.5 to 10 mpg with the camper on I will be a happy camper. I just finished adding the camper mounts and wiring so I’m hoping to test it out soon. I am very happy with how the truck drives and rides empty.

I am getting 10ish MPG in my 1500 and it has 3.21 gear. If I get that in my 2500, I will be happy. I bought a truck, so I am not concerned with MPG.

Just because I am learning what all this stuff means, if two identical trucks of the same weight were traveling on the flat at the same RPMs, one with a 3.73 and the other with a 4.10, would they both theoretically get the same mileage? Of course I understand that the 4.10 would probably be going 5mph or so slower at the same RPMs.

On another note, does anyone know what the most efficient RPMs are for the Hemi?

Because life is better with 4.10's. You will hear a lot of maximum fuel economy reasons, but if maximum economy, as opposed to pulling power, was my primary focus, then I'm buying the wrong vehicle.

I just ordered a 2500 gasser with 4:10's and my reasoning was this. First, I do not pay for my own fuel. I dont tow heavy, but my pontoon boat is a huge sail, so the shorter gear will be help. I plow with it, so same reason as towing. My last gas truck had 3:73's and it sucked. Granted it was an anemic 5.4 Ford, but still.
