What would you be missing out on a new build right now due to the chip shortage?

I am still trying to figure out which brand I want to go with, but I am definitely leaning more toward a 3/4 ton truck with gas engine right now because I don't do enough towing to justify a diesel. If I do go with Ram, I would probably want a Big Horn because while I do not need the fanciest top of the line model, I do want some features above the bottom level so a Big Horn might be good. Seeing that I have never found a Big Horn 2500 with a 6.4 in stock anywhere, I am probably going to have to order one. Anyways, I am not fully up to date on how the chip shortage is affecting these, but I have read places where some of the packages are being changed. I don't know what the packages were to begin with so was wondering if you guys know any features that we will be missing out on if we were to order one now. If it is anything significant, I am really in no rush but would like to have this by the end of the year or could even hold out until early next year if I need to, so that is another option if you think it might be worth the wait. Thanks for the input.

AFAIK, just the Blindspot monitoring and crosspath detection are being dropped on trims below Limited/Longhorn.

Is the blindspot monitoring just the light on the mirror or pillar that flashes whenever someone is next to you that most cars have now, or is there more to it than that? What is the crosspath detection?

Blind Spot Monitoring will alert you if another vehicle is traveling in one of your blind spot zones, while Rear Cross Path Detection will warn you of vehicles crossing your path when you're backing up.

I didn't want a top of the line limited either. But when I added up the cost of all the crap I did want on a Laramie it was more than the Limited! Add to that the fact I got a 2020 Limited CTD for $20K off it was hard to pass up, in fact the wife actually said buy it! It has everything I wanted and way more than I needed and I have no regrets at all. I absolutely love this truck and I'm amazed by the diesel every time I drive it. Just did a quick run to Corning CA 175 miles each way at pretty much a constant 80mph, add in 12 miles of stop and go on the freeway and this big heavy truck still averaged 18.6 mpg. I can tell you my 2017 Laramie 1500 Hemi did worse than that in those conditions.

Build a Tradesman as you would the Bighorn, you may be surprised. My Tradesman trucks has many features that the Bighorn and Laramie does. And my 2020 RAM 3500 TradesmanCC LB Dually HO Aisin was $52.5 OTD

When I was doing a build on Saturday, you could select blind spot but I’m not sure if your order would be delayed until they get more chips in for lower trim levels or they would just go ahead and build it without it.

Cross path..rear detection..have people forgotten how to pay attention and drive?
I know what you mean. Both of my vehicles are at least 12 years old so I have never even owned a vehicle with a backup camera so when I have rented a car with one, I don't even find myself looking at it. That being said, I guess it is just a little frustrating that if you are spending $50k or more, a feature that is standard in many other cars has been removed. But good point, I guess since I am not used to it anyways, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Especially with the huge mirrors on these things!

Wow, that is a good price. Did you build that or find it on the lot like that? I haven't really looked into that but does a higher package essentially just come with more standard features so you don't have to add them (where you could have everything on a Tradesman that is on a Big Horn or Laramie but would just have to add them individually)?

In February when I ordered my Laramie, those features were dropped from the packages but Blind Spot/Cross Path could be added back on as an individual feature if the dealer knew what they were doing. I don't know if that is still the case. My build sheet has also not appeared yet to verify those features made it onto my truck.

there is no blind spot alert chip shortage, there is a chip shortage. Carmakers don’t make their own chips, they use companies like TSMC and Samsung. Everyone uses TSMC... so when people have been stuck at home for a year and are buying more xboxes, appliances, and flat panel displays, TSMC manufacturing capacity gets soaked up and client deliveries for orders get pushed out. Lean manufacturing rules the auto industry. Components are delivered just-in-time, there is no inventory. Start pushing out some chip deliveries and the entire manufacturing process grinds to a halt. The same thing happened in 2018 when a magnesium plant caught fire and Ford F150 production shut down. This chip shortage is no trivial matter, everyone that relies on semiconductors is being impacted.

No one knows what chips are not being delivered, except Ram and that information would be highly valuable to competitors so they won’t discuss it publicly.
