Long story short, im starting my search for an enclosed trailer to tow behind my 2500. Im Active Duty, so I move around alot, figured I have a strong truck may as well move my self and make some extra money when i PCS. I have found a 8x24 enclosed trailer local to me, but its hard to find info on what is a good size that wont be a squeeze for all our stuff. I have a 4 bedroom house, 3k sqft, and a 2 car garage. Normal amount of stuff about 12k pounds worth of house hold goods.

ANy input or experience is welcomed. Im thinking 28 feet is the smallest i should go. thanks in advance.

If you’re serious about moving yourself in a single trip from the size of house you’re describing, all possessions (all furniture) / appliances stay with house. And don’t want to be squeezed, you’ll need a semi and the longest box trailer allowed in your state.

That being said, you’re asking a question with a ton of variables. How much stuff you really have. And how good you are at packing and playing Tetris. You’ve probably moved more than once before and know that not all items stack well, and you hardly get to ever utilize the full height of a trailer.

I think it ended up taking me 3 trips to move my 2,000 sqft house and garage/yard stuff with a 8.5x18’ enclosed trailer.

Yeah, I know its an open ended question lol. Just trying to get an ear for peoples personal experience like yours. I like to think my tetris game is on point lol. Unfortunately I will have todo it in 1 trip, going from Washington state to southern Cali. Def not the first time ive moved lol. im on my 4th duty station. So i think this is move 7. I found a 24 foot trailer local, but I def think 28 or 30 is the smallest i would go. its a pain in the ass to move, but the amount of money the DOD pays us todo it our self is to much to pass lol.

Maybe you can load what doesn't fit in the trailer into a pod and have that shipped.

31ft enclosed GN is what i have used for moving i borrowed it off a buddy of mine it worked pretty good aslong as your good at Tetris lol

I have looked at the gooseneeck option. silly covid has everything so limited now. Yeah, the pods idea isnt bad for anything left over.

No kidding, my wife was just said she wants alot of new stuff when we get there. We do plan on purging alot of the older bulkier stuff. Good insight, thanks.

Make sure the axles on that enclosed trailer are at least 5k each. I saw a few 24's that only had 3.5k axles meaning you can only put about 3k of payload in them.

As much as length is important, don’t overlook height. For moving possessions instead of cars, I would look for an internal height of 7’ 6” or more. There are hundreds of these trailers for sale across the country. Georgia seems to have the best pricing because of proximity to the manufacturing facilities.

I have seen quite a few that are offering the "extra 6 inches of head space". You arnt lying about that tho, there are tons on the east coast. Just a bit of a drive from Seattle, lol. I do havw time tho, I dont pcs untill October so im.nkt in a super huge hurry and I'm not afraid to road trip for the right one.

I filled a 24ft enclosed with the contents of a one bedroom and a one car garage. The biggest issue is being able to use the height of the trailer. Plastic tubs are best for stacking high. Boxes just don’t hold up under the weight. Also have to be careful with some of the lower priced trailers. They tend to hold much less weight. I’d definitely go with a tall trailer if for no other reason than resale. A lot of people use them for ATVS and most side by sides with a roll bar won’t fit in the standard height trailers. Just my experience.

Yeah, i def think taller is better. As of now, I dont plan on resale, due to moving so much. All you guys insight has helped a ton.

Its not about how big, its about how much weight, tongue weight and trailer weight, crossing the US I used a 24ft car hauler 10500 GVW trailer weighed 4100 lbs empty so I could only put 6000lbs and it was only half full so i bought a dually with a 4200lb bed load which gave me an extra 2000lbs in the box with a 1000lb tongue weight. Good luck

I PCS’d two years ago for the last time, it was only me and my wife at that point and I had enough stuff to completely fill a 26 foot Uhaul. And then I also had to tow our car behind that uhaul and fly back and get the second car. We’re not hoarders, just regular people haha. It always takes up more space then you think it will.

I should be ordering a 32 foot bumper pull once i get back to Seattle. triple 7500 pound axels and a foot of extra celling height. I wanted a stacker, but the mrs said no

Lol, yup. I semi did the math, and 28 foot would have cut it. so 32-34 should do just dandy. Just gotta get over the hump of having to move an entire house.... time to purge all the crap we dont use
