I had a oopsie with my dropped tailgate and maneuvering my equipment trailer around. Trailer won. Headed over to car-part.com website to see what was available for takeoffs with my color and found one in new condition. It’s in the armpit of the east coast aka Jersey but my local yard in CT (jerseys red headed stepchild) works with the other yard and can get it shipped up for less then I would save driving to jerz. One thing that stood out was it was listed for 2019 2500 with the classic style bed. I knew the 1500’s are available as a classic package, they look like 4th gens. Apparently wrecking yards believe some time after 5th gen HD production started they changed the bed up so there is an early (classic) and late model “new body style” bed and tailgate. After doing some research it turns out the easiest way to tell is if the wall of the bed right behind the cab has 8 squares you have the classic model bed, if it has vertical lines that line up with the ribs on the bed floor you have the late series bed. There are some other changes as well with wheelwell shapes, tailgate shape and possibly others as well. Does anyone have the new style on the HD’s or do the junkyards use the description as a carryover from the 1500s bed styling? Google image search found these but the look 1500ish to me.

I’ve got a classic bed. The other way to tell is if the rear of the bed is narrower than the front, measured rail to rail, then it’s a classic. The same it’s the new style. I needed to know that when I ordered my tonneau cover.

I also noticed (from working in a body shop for almost 20yrs) the taillights are different also. Looks like the classic has the smaller taillights with bulbs and the new would be the larger with LED.

I honestly don’t know if classic vs new body style applies to the HD trucks, but it’s the way the junk yards seem to be listing them.

Neither of those beds pictured are for a 2019+ HD Ram. The top one is for a 4th gen UP TO 2018, including the 2019-2020 classic 1500’s. You can tell by the tail lights, as they are still the combined lighting style. The bottom pic is of an actual 5th gen 1500 bed, which is taller, has taller/different shaped tail lights, and not used on 2019+ HD Ram. ALL non-RamBox beds used on 2019-2020 HD Rams are the same, and there was no switch in “styles” used.

The bed on a 2019 and 2020 HeavyDuty is exactly the same as the 2010 to 2018 HeavyDuty. (In the 6'4 same as the 2009 to 2019 classic 1500)

The taillights are of the new style...but the shape is exactly the same.

Why we call it the 4.5 Gen.

Cab and bed are still 4th gen. Fenders hood bumpers and tailgate are a new design.

This is not correct. The mounting for the tailgate is different, as well as the opening behind the tail lights. Yes, the shape of the tail lights are the same, and interchangeable, but the hole is a bit “deeper” to easily accept the tails with blind spot sensors. There is also different stamping inside the tail light hole to accept the hidden tailgate damper.

Ok, change exactly to minor modification. In the areas I mentioned are new.

I apologize. You are correct. It is not the same bed. It is the 4th Gen bed with modification in the tailgate and taillight area. 4.5 Gen

They are indeed minor. I would hate to see someone buy a 10-18 bed as a replacement only to find out their tailgate won’t fit without some modifications.

@Jimmy07 I realize now he was talking about getting another bed, not accessories. And that definetly makes a difference. And the tailgate is definitely different. But, it would be pretty obvious to the junkyard and purchaser I would hope.

Thanks for catching my oversight and providing some great info. Why we are in this together. Learn something new everyday and teach what we learn.
