Hello all! I am a first time Ram owner. I had my truck in my shop this week and decided to get under the truck because I saw a small oil drop on the floor. Appears the oil is from a dealer technician that just did not clean up well from a service. After cleaning up all the oil left behind I noticed my winch rope looked distorted so I took my light to get a good look and the rope looks sorta melted together or something on the right side of these pictures I have attached. Before I took delivery of my new to me truck at 35k miles on it, I had the salesman unwind some rope just to let me see that the winch is working. He only let out a few feet and then back in and I was okay with that. I do not think the previous owner ever used the winch because the remote and other winch items that came with the truck were still wrapped and taped up in the floor rear storage compartment. Has anyone seen this with their winch rope or can give me some thoughts on what could have distorted this rope? I really wanted to unwind the rope to see what is going on, but then thought that since I am still under 36k miles that maybe I should let the dealer see this and go from there. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.wBG%bCKlRrW+TnESt%4oDA.jpguf1CkS5YS7a0H5d9npEU1Q.jpgqkgQVREiT8CKaYaDiW6Eaw.jpggUE2k8HKQsOA0zTkzASGIQ.jpg

Yeah, just replace the rope. It's not that expensive and will be a good peace of mind for you in case you need it.
And you don't need to pay for the Warn premium price.

the ropes aren’t wound tightly from new, the salesman might have wound the rope tight on top of loose rope and deformed it a bit…doubtful it is damaged, that will damage wire rope though.
Unwind it down to the last few wraps and roll it in under tension, watch a Youtube video if unsure how.

Unspool it and inspect. If you push the rope (think opening a Chinese finger trap), the strands should loosen up and return to normal. If they remain stuck together and do not loosen, replace the line. Then cut the damaged section off,, and turn the remainder into an extension by splicing the end into an eye!

That’s normal. Synthetic line does that.

FYI all Synthetic winch line, to my knowledge, is made of UHMWPE. Basically thin strands of cutting board material braided together. It’s very tough.
