“New” to Ram HD Forum. I have a 2015 2500 6.7 CTD. Just took it to a trusted diesel mechanic (not a dealership) for a check engine light (107,000). Got the callback: bad turbo… $5,800 in parts, and top with labor. Ouch.
So, the question begs, how often do turbos “go bad”? Did I pick a bad year (bought used with only 64k on it)?
I know it’s worth fixing, as I don’t have $100k or so sitting around to try to buy a new one, but…
Is this a ”normal/semi-normal” thing that happens? How long should the turbo last?

If my brother in law wasn't a diesel tech for ram, I would have someone either prove to me what's wrong or get a second opinion.

Coulda been built on a Monday morning or Friday after lunch. Anything man made can and will fail. Some just prematurely go out. May have been dirty oil, may have been coked oil, etc. too many variables to know why it went out but from my understanding a turbo can last as long as the engine. Had the dreaded 6.5 in a Chevy 3500 with 157k on it. Turbo went out. Seen other engines with half a millions miles with original turbo. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in.
Edit: I would definitely have a second or maybe even third opinion.

Most likely the actuator and some guys just write off the turbo instead, what issues were you having?
