Truck slipped out of R

I just had my truck slip out of R and it was odd. The truck knew something was wrong but it didn’t “auto park” either

The truck was cold (ambient ~55°) and I started it for the first time this week maybe 5 days. I cranked it and drove forward a few feet, turned the wheel and started backing up my driveway which is a slight hill but not steep.

The truck started backing up normally and then I felt it let go, like being in neutral, the engine revved because I had been pushing the gas, I started rolling forward but I hit the brake and held it. The truck felt like it was in N now.

The truck made no noise other than the rev. Nothing popped or cracked etc. it may have had a warning beep of some sort but I can’t fully remember a beep.

The shift indicator on the dash and the shift knob were both blinking R rapidly. I let off the brake and the truck rolled so it was still in neutral but the indicator was flashing R. shifting to P and back fixed everything.

No warning lights or messages, just a one off occurrence so far.

Just sharing this to possibly start a discussion, I don’t think I have a specific question about it.

It sucks when strange unexplainable crap happens but maybe somebody has had some experience/ insight. Maybe she needs a good kick in the rear.

I am hoping / thinking there is some sort of safety built in that I tripped.

There seem to be some hidden reverse safeties. One is some sort of alarm beep that is separate from the sensor beep. The other being hill start assist/ anti roll back. These are my experiences with them:
Sometimes when reversing my truck will beep even though my rear sensors are off and I have never been quite sure what it is warning me about. Typically in the same driveway below, I think it happens when I get a “running start” it does not approve.

I have also been heckled by family because it seems like my truck can’t back up their driveway but here is the scenario: I am backing up a driveway steep enough that I can’t really see the sidewalk, so I back up slowly and then I ease up when I can see the street/sidewalk clearly and the truck does a sort of hill start assist and holds me there. I then want to backup but it takes extra fuel to get the truck to “let go of hill start assist” but I also don’t want to peel tires like a douche so it pretty much just sounds like my truck is struggling but not moving as i keep giving it more and more fuel but it doesn’t move. haha

Weird I haven't encountered anything like that. Was it possible the shifter was between detents? Wouldn't explain the blinking light in R though.

To be honest, I’m not sure how the transmission actually shifts since it’s a rotary dial.

The blinking lights, to me, indicated that the truck made the call to drop it out of gear. It was very similar to how auto park works with the blinking lights.

It doesn’t really make sense that the truck would do that on purpose, but that’s how it seemed.

Was the door shut tight? When I tried to back with the door open it did the same thing to me, but not sure if it went into park or not.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, Yes, the door was closed.

That’s auto-park when the door is ajar and the seatbelt is not fastened. This wasn’t that.

Mine HO does this beeping sometimes and every time I would tell it to stop doing it because it is not a forklift, lol. I think it might something to do with blind spot when it detects something is behind but not directly behind the sensors. I figured this when you sometimes put it in R on a parking lot and waiting for whoever's passing back there to pass and the truck would start beeping. I could be wrong but this is the explanation I came up with, it doesn't beep in other situations.
