Truck shutting down after starting and idling for 5-10 seconds in cold weather

Greetings to all,

New member here, long time Ram owner. Appreciate the ability to become a member on this forum.

I don't want to be seen as the guy who just jumps on a forum with a problem then bounces, so if there is anything I can do to help on this forum please let me know.

The issue I am having is once the outside temperature started dropping below 40 degrees here in Charleston, yes I know, thats not cold to most lol,
my truck has been acting up by starting like there is nothing wrong, auto start and regular key starts, grid heater warms up, I have the Banks Monster Ram on my truck,
after the truck idles for 5-10 seconds, the engine will shut off, sometimes it will start immediately back up and repeat idle for 5-10 seconds and then shut down.

If I push the go pedal down and hold the rpms around 1100-1300, the motor will not shut off.

If I can get it into drive and start driving, the truck shuts down.

I changed the fuel filters and used Diesel Kleen fuel additive for cold weather and that didn't solve anything.

I just installed new batteries 4 months ago also.

Any help would be appreciated.

Semper Fidelis,
James

What brand fuel filters did you use is my first question?

It sounds like it’s losing prime, running off the fuel in the filter then sucking air almost. Some of the aftermarket filters cause an issue that allows fuel to return to the tank. No check engine lights on? Low fuel light on?

I would personally use the mopar filters. What year was the truck? i know the older ones had screw on filters in the rear so if its aftermarket its possible that the filter isnt holding prime. I would get a mopar set and swap them out and see if the problem goes away.

have you pulled codes? Might not have a CIL but may have something stored.

Changed the filters, truck seems to start and run fine at the moment, hasn’t sat out in the cold all night, will see how it starts up tomorrow morning and report back.

Hooked my ez lynk up to it and pulled these codes:

U010E
U0100

Wasn’t able to clear the codes with the EZ Lynk, does anyone know what scan tool can delete those codes?

What brand filters did you replace them with?

Good Morning Y'all,

I am greatful for the advice, it was in fact the fuel filters. I changed them out with mopar oem filters and truck runs like nothing ever happened.

Thanks for all the help.

Well….. my truck ran fine for a total of 2 days before the same problems have come back, getting service fuel filter warning on my dash. Not sure what it could be now.

The U0100 code indicates a loss of communication with the ECM/PCM "A". It's a common error that can occur in cars with automatic transmissions. Some common causes of this code include:
  • A faulty battery with low voltage
  • Damaged terminals
  • Disconnected connectors
  • A loose ground to a module
  • A faulty control module circuit
  • Problems with the CAN bus
  • A damaged or disconnected connector or wiring harness in the CAN bus network

Where did you get the Mopar filters? Amazon is a known source for counterfeit OEM filters. As well as EBay.

I don’t know if you got this issue squared away or not yet but I just came across an issue with remote starting then the motor dying and it telling me my coolant was low. Checked level and it was in fact below the minimum level so I drove to the nearest gas station and bought coolant. When I opened the reservoir the reservoir sicked air and coolant came back up to acceptable level. Very weird. Currently 19 degrees here in north Texas on a 2019 bighorn. I topped off the reservoir (added very minimal coolant) and all is well (so far)
