Truck Battery Issues - Cranks, will not start

My hope with this post is to better understand how a 'bad' battery impacts the trucks systems.

Background: Woke up this morning to temps in the low 30's and my truck would not start. This is the original battery, approximately 2 1/2 years old. I understand they are evidently crappy batteries. I used my NOCO Boost lithium jump starter (rated for this truck) and was able to get the truck to crank (turn over) but not start (run). Attempted to start a few times, no joy. It had a healthy crank but no indication fuel or spark were happening. I replaced with a new lead acid battery and the truck now starts/runs fine.

My questions are...
- Why did the truck crank but not start?
- Is the NOCO jump starter useless for our trucks?
- It feels like there was enough juice with the NOCO jump starter to engage the starter but not all the truck systems? That would be weird but kinda where I'm leaning.
- Should I expect these issues once this Interstate battery reaches ends of life?

Anyone have any experience with these issues I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Its the way the NOCO and all those smaller bodied lithium jump packs work they don't apply power until they see the large draw from the starter so the computer systems that need to see 12V before the engine cranks don't get the power they need. I assume you have a hemi? I have one of the NOCO 3000W packs and the old large style ones that has an on off switch for the power supply. My neighbours 2019 3500 hemi would not start I put the NOCO on and it would crank but not run then I used my old style one to test my theory and it started no problem.

yes, I have the 6.4 gas. I contacted NOCO and it appears I should read the F'in manual before use. There is functionality internal to the NOCO boost that will not jump a battery below 2v unless you manually override. According to the tech, there can be enough amps present to power the starter but not other starting systems on the truck. The NOCO has intelligence (safety) in it. All good to know, especially if I'm needing a jump in BFE.

Good morning All. I hope this finds everyone safe and healthy!

So my 22 CTD is at the dealer (getting it back today, they have had it since Thursday) for a battery issue. Including the batteries from the factory, this is battery number 5. It has only been 11 months since they replaced the two original batteries. Took delivery Dec 21.

Question.
@RamCares - is there a free replacement period for oem batteries when they have been replaced under warranty? I am being told that the free replacement period does not exist, even though it is in writing. Link below.

Please help me to understand what the warranty states. My dealer says they are doing me a favor by “good willing” a battery to me since it was replace 11 months ago.

Additionally it took 23.5 hours for the “good” battery to charge!!!

Be safe!

Thank you,
Randy

Thanks for reaching out, and bringing this to our attention, Randy. Vehicle concerns are never what we want for our customers in any capacity, and our team would like to see where we can best assist. Please reach out to us with the above information as well as the name and location of your dealer for further handling. Again, your outreach is appreciated, and we hope to connect with you soon.

@RamCares

Chris, Thank you for reaching back. I got my truck back on Monday. The dealer gave me a new battery (claim as a good will gesture) because the regional representative told them it is not covered. Again I direct you to Mopar.com and look up limited warranty and battery replacement warranty. I would really like to know who the regional rep that covers the Hampton Roads (South East Va) is.

They only replaced the one (dead) battery. The “good “ battery” that supported the dead battery for lord knows how long was put back in my truck, after taking 23hrs 47mins to charge. The concern is, how long before it craps out and the new battery starts carrying the load for both, and I end up back in the same situation. First set lasted two years, second set, one battery lasted 10 months. I have used 5 different Mopar OE batteries the 2 years and 11 months of ownership.

Thank you and be safe.
Randy
