Which transmission?

The dealer is likely referring to the K1 snap ring failure that effected some 2022/23 Aisin’s.

Comments:

Which trans?
How many miles?
What does "multiple complaints/issues" mean?
How much do you know about Ram transmissions, both the 68 and the Aisin?
Who really sent you to HDRams and why?

I'll never understand some peoples kids... They roll in, toss out some really vague statements around something that failed massively, worst customer experience ever, then off they go.
But I am an optimist. The Ram dealer closest to me has a 45 day wait for service appointments. This guy dropped in Jan 28, that was only nine days ago. He might be waiting for his local Ram dealer to fit him in. If this happened where I live, the dealer wouldn't have time to look at it for at least 4 more weeks.

Let's all give him the benefit of the doubt, for our own collective benefit. I personally very much want to know about that transmission failure. I'd love some photos, ideally of a tear down. We might get lucky and he'll be back.

I agree with jharp. I jumped the gun the other day on the squirly towing dude and he ended up coming back. Some people just don’t understand forums I gather. Hopefully he chimes back in.

Side note…Jeep dealer just told my buddy it would be 3 weeks to look at his possibly failed rear differential under his Wagoneer. It’s getting crazy. Some people depend on their vehicles. I’m lucky to beat up on a company vehicle daily.

I also have a 2024 RAM 3500 with the Aisin. The truck has 13,000 miles and I have had it for about a year. It always had a small "nudge" when coming to a stop as it shifts down to first gear. This is always on the 2-1 downshift when stopping. Overall, I really like how it shifts firmly and allows the engine to work compared the the 68RFE in my previous 6.7 truck.

The other day stopping to park, not towing anything, it gave a very abrupt kick along with a metallic "clang" - sounded like someone hit the driveshaft with a BIG hammer. Again, on the 2-1 downshift. Something let go for sure. It makes this clank and hard kick when stopping every time now. (one day driving local - only a few miles) Trans temp running very high (230ish) suddenly. Ram Customer Care (don't Care really) instructed me to drive it rather than tow it since it would still move and they would not tow it 40 miles to my Selling Dealer.

I drove the 40 miles, trans heats up faster than the coolant...lol. Anyway, I lost top gears, cruise control, manual gear selection and all as the temp kept climbing. Engine coolant and oil temps remained normal. I managed to limp it to the dealer last night, stopping at times to let the trans temps cool. I will update once they find what is going on. I watched this thread as the original poster just ghosted the group, hopefully I can be helpful once I have some updates.

Update on the Aisin failure. My dealer has just contacted me to advise that they ordered a replacement transmission assembly. It seems the transmission has an internal failure (surprise!) as the fluid is burnt and there are metal pieces and particles in the pan. I am unsure how far they will tear it down to see what happened in there; Aisin or Ram may want it returned whole for inspection.

The replacement transmission is expected in 3-5 days and my Dealer has provided a 2500 as a loaner for me to use in the meantime! Big shout out to these guys for their support!!

I will update again once I am on the road again!

Next update: My dealer contacted me on Monday afternoon this week- I just dropped it Monday after hours last week- to let me know that the transmission came in and is now installed. I am ready to go! I cannot express how thankful I am for all that my dealer did for me with no notice- to get me back on the road and save my camping season. So far, the truck runs great, shifts better than it did even when new, and runs cool again as it should. I was very lucky to be home and not travelling, I would imagine that if I broke down on the road my options would have been limited. Fortunately, I was able to bring it to my selling dealer that I already have a sales and service relationship with.

Unfortunately, they do not go into the transmission to determine why it failed as it comes as a complete assembly and has to be returned to the manufacturer as an intact unit. I would have been interested to know what failed in there. Some previous threads refer to a snap ring of some sort breaking, but I just don't know what happened in my case. I am certain that when it made that big "clang" noise, something mechanical inside the transmission must have actually broken since the failure was immediate.

Today, I will pull our 14,000lb 5th wheel for our Memorial Day camping trip. We will travel in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, so I imagine some 9% to 13% grades will find out if I have any issues. At least it will be a good comparison as I have pulled this camper on these roads many times with this truck and my previous one as well.

Thanks for the update. Glad your dealer has done right by you. **** happens, and it's good to know most of them care.

After our camping weekend in the mountains, all is well. I had no additional issues and the truck still runs cool and tows like a champ. As LakeLife said, "S*** Happens!"
All we can do is hope for the best and appreciate the efforts of those who are there to help - my dealer was also 45+ days out for appointments but they handled this right away. For that I am very thankful.

Hopefully Let none has been fixed up and is back on the road again as well.
