I really liked how easy my 2500 6.7 pulled my Grand Design 230 (about 7200lb) but was a little (just a little) unhappy about how hard it hit a couple of gears.
Seemed like either 4th into 5th or 5th into 6th, it clunked quite noticeably.....I chalked it up to only only having 6500 total miles on the truck.

Is this just the way it is, is this something to address with dealer or will it smooth out as it breaks in and the sharp corners wear off!!! Am I just being oversensitive and a completely new father, hearing every little noise my baby is making?

I've posted several questions being new to 2500's and diesel engines, but have not been disappointed with my new acquaintances on this site and the wealth of info i have learned.......thanks to all in advance.

Were you going up an incline or really smashing the pedal from a stop/slow speed? Towing my toy hauler I've never noticed any weird gear changes.

The weirdest thing I can recall is empty with auto exhaust brake engaged it will some times clunk down to 3rd or 2nd kind of hard. If I use full exhaust brake or no exhaust brake it never happens. It will "slip" gears pretty good during hard upshifts while towing. I lock 6th out if I know there will be frequent elevation changes.

I would expect no improvement or changes, after 6500miles your transmission should be pretty much fully broken in.

Edit: meant to say it slips the clutches pretty good when downshifting hard while towing. I believe I've heard it called "flare". It never slips the clutches while upshifting

Thanks Loss.....i experienced it just a couple times, and it was basicalled from dead stop thru the gears, normal acceleration, no harsh takeoff or anything outta the norm.

Ps........how do you "lock out' 6th?
Thanks again Sir

Use the gear limit buttons on your steering wheel, mine does it the odd time no biggie i find the hardest feeing is the 6th gear lockup when the rpms drop you can feel it but thats not out of the ordinary and when it drops to 2nd with the EB on full... as long as its not slipping your good

Thanks H3., I'll get used to it.

I have been wondering about the gear limit features on my Ram as well and have tried looking up videos on the good ol interweby and not coming up with any thing to splain this.

Can you splain it? Is there a video for this that splains it? When/ at what point would these be used?

Respectfully

Hit the - button once and it will show the current gear.

Press it again and it will drop a gear. This is the highest gear it will run and you have "locked out" the higher gears. The computer won't let you do something really stupid and downshift if it will over rev the engine.

If you're pulling an incline in 6th gear, and it starts to lug or wants to drop a gear, then maybe it tries to shift back up, you can "lock out" 6th gear and keep it in 5th by using the gear limit button. It will NOT force upshifts so it's not like a full manual gear selector. If you press + it will move up the gears to set the limit. If you leave it displaying 6th gear or hit + on 6th gear displayed, you cancel the lockout feature.

P.S. we also figured out how to force the gear display on all the time if you are setup with AlfaOBD.

Brutal, it will take me a few times reading this and put in practical use to make heads/tails of it, but this is awesome info.......thanks for taking the time.
(Love this site)

What is AlfaOBD?

Lol.....thanks for asking Chris......I wanted to know to.

I'm not ultra familiar with it, but its a device that lets you make some changes to the vehicle computer for tire size etc. There are several threads on it that some of the other members may be able to direct you to.

It does more than that it lets you add factory parts and enable them to work without going to dealer to add the sales code( if they even have the option) it is a great tool to have

I admittedly did not take the time to comb through this, but, I'm assuming there's some good info that will answer some basic questions in there.

I knew it did more, but I just said "etc" to avoid making myself into a liar in case I said something that wasn't true. ;)

You did say something that wasn't true. AlfaOBD is not a device, it's a software program available in Windows and Android. Liar! :p

I'll see myself out.
I'm used to the TazerJL I use in the Jeep which is super awesome for what I need out of it, but it does look like the Tazer for the Ram doesn't offer the same suite of features and I don't like how it appears to connect.
