Trailer Tires

Had a question about trailer tires.

Recently bought a Diamond C MDT dump trailer. The gross trailer weight rating is just under 10k (like 9980 or something...). Its a bit overbuilt with twin 6k axles under it and has load range E tires on it.

I normally like to switch out the factory tires with Goodyear Endurance. They make an E rated tire in my size (235/80R16) with a load rating of 3420 per tire - putting the total at 13680 - which IMO leaves quite a decent amount of "room for error". I've put Endurance on all my other trailers with no problems (5k TT, 3.5K Utility trailer) and have just preferred them over china bombs.....

Problem is I've had more than one person tell me now they'd upgrade to a load range F or even G tire which puts close to 20k of capacity.

Is there something I'm not thinking of? I tend to be careful with how much weight I put in a trailer - afterall my truck is a PW with Daystar cradles/bags so its not a super heavy hauler anyway. It seems to me the higher load ranges would be a complete waste. In the case of a larger trailer (something 14K or higher) or if I was some moron overloading everything the higher load ranges would give you room for error. However in my case it seems I'd just be trading ride quality, tire wear and suspension wear for more capacity.

Just wanted opinions and to know if I'm not thinking of something....

No real good reason to go with a F or G tire on that trailer. If you were to inflate them to F or G pressures they wouldn’t wear even, would brake poorly (especially when empty or on wet roads, and would be more susceptible to road hazards.

Personally I’d put some LT235/85R16 LRE tires on it with a closed shoulder highway tread.

What's the reason for an LT tire?

I agree with you about the added pressures of the F and G

Better traction (braking and lateral on wet/slick roads), longer lasting, better road hazard protection, and better handling.

I switch all my trailers to an LT and the improvement is always drastic.

Great! Thank you for the advice

I have these LT tires on my fifth wheel for two years. Like them a lot.

I ran the R500HD’s for 9 seasons on the TT/ 5th wheel (kept them when we sold the TT) and they were great. I currently have Cooper HT3’s on the 5th wheel and they are also doing grest.

We have R509HD’s on the horse trailer and Kenda Klevers on the elk camp toy hauler.

The little Jay Feather TT has the OE tires still, but they aren’t ST’s. They are a P rated AT that I’ll replace next year with LT LRC’s.

I usually wear the OEMs out first but E is more than enough, don't listen to the people who just want to spend your money, LT tires are a great option, to be honest i would usually put the dually rear tires on the dump trailer when they got lower on tread and put new tires on the dually.

How many miles you plan on putting on the trailer? I usually have my get weather checked before they wear out

Oh I’ll be in that same boat too. I’ve never actually worn a trailer tire out - they’ll need replacement due to age before tread wear
