TPMS is strange after new tires/wheels

I had new wheels and tires installed at a local shop. They broke two of my brand new OEM sensors during the install so I still need to return to have them fix them.

Here is what is odd. On the way home my system still read the old readings. I expected this since I still had the old wheels/tires in the bed. However, it has been several days since I unloaded them and the truck still shows the old pressures and isn't giving me any errors. The new 37" tires are set to a much lower pressure. I haven't gone into AlfaOBD to change any settings yet but I did lower settings in the tire pressure fill alert screen in the settings menu. I am not 100% sure that works, but it seems some have had good luck with that setting recently. Regardless, I expected to see a change in pressure on the display or at least an error or service message since I am missing two sensors.

not sure how the could break them as the are about impossible to break, the tire place must have some real winners working there. how did they break them?. Having tires in your bed will not read on your truck. How many miles have you driven it sometimes takes 20 miles or so for the sensors to register. If they are OEM sensors they link up automatically nothing you have to do as far as turning them on. how do break this?

They cracked them. Can you overtighten them? Maybe the hathe FNG on them. I saw one on them and it was definitely broken. I have about 100 miles on them in 4 trips. I am not really worried about it since I am waiting on two new sensors from the dealer. Just seemed odd that I was not at least getting an error from the system.

BTW - When I checked the pressure in the tires, 3 tires were at 67 and one was at 50. 50 is the max pressure on the tires.

Any chance you noted the sensor IDs for the new sensors?

If so, you connect to the RFHub within AlfaOBD you can program the sensors manually with those IDs.

Otherwise, you can scan and see if it'll pick up the new ones.

Its really easy to break em if you dont start removing/ installing the tires at 90* from the valvestem (rule of thumb is 90* because ford used to put the sensors 180* from the stem) if you start at 180 from the stem with the dodge sensors you will crush them with the bead as it tries to go to the drop center when removing/installing.... all the shops i have worked at i have seen tons of noobs destroy sensors even after being trained

If they are the same hz they will usually connect after 20 mins of driving

Unfortunately, I didn't make a note. I did see one of the installers going around and holding a reader up to the tires to verify they were working. I figure once they replace the two broken ones I will just deal with it myself.

Sounds like thats the last time i would use that tire shop if they cant even fill a tire there is no hope for them

Yeah, and it's a shop I have used for years too. I am hoping they just had some new employees. We'll see how they handle things when I go back.

Still waiting on the replacement sensors. It took two weeks, but the truck finally realized the sensors they broke weren't there.

Finally had the broken sensors replace. Took about 10 minutes of driving for them to register but all seems good now. And they didn't over fill my tires this time. LOL

So how does this system work? I assume tire shops have it figured out because after a rotation, the sensors are still showing the correct location

Yes, it is all automagic. Strange that mine didn't pick up the two tires that had the good sensors in them during the few weeks they were out. They had some temporary sensors in the rear. Maybe those threw the receiver for a loop.

Little off topic but how do you change the tpms. Setting??? I just got 35 installed and want to lower setting so light goes away...

I used AlfaOBD with the Kaodtech bypass cable and an OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth scanner.

So what I understand is that after a rotation, the system sense's (?) the location and corrects it. I plan to rotate tires about every six weeks (12,000-15,000 miles) and really don't want a serious headache each time. I pull heavy (9800 lb trailer with up to 15,000 lbs loaded)

That is correct.

What happens once you decide to change tires and go with another brand or tire size that requires a different PSI? Can you adjust the spec's in the UConnect5 system to account for the new tire pressure?

I also went with Falken Wildpeak AT3 295/70/18. Curious as to what is the best tire pressure to inflate my new tires when running empty. I run empty for most of the year only hauling a trailer occasionally.

Seems I read somewhere there is a chart that will calculate the best PSI to run. Can someone help me in the area? Thanks
