Cummins SO w/ 68RFE - Built 5/22 - Less than 5k miles.

I’m thinking the below is torque converter related, but wanted to get some other thoughts and see if anyone on here has had a similar issue:

Torque Converter Noise Video

Backstory/ Observations:

I didn’t notice any noise when I bought the truck, but started hearing a drivetrain grinding noise develop at around 1200 miles. I first noticed it while cruising 55-60mph with very light throttle input; then I started to notice it driving around town at 30mph, again with light throttle (almost balancing the engine speed in between the drivetrain backlash if that makes sense.) It is more noticeable when going downhill, and with more mileage, it got to the point of almost matching the noise and feel of the exhaust brake being engaged, even though the exhaust brake was off.

I took it to the dealer at around 2100 miles with this concern, along with a few others, including the ticking/rattle noise at 1200+ rpms that a lot of other folks are reporting. The service writer seemed pretty dismissive about the concerns, and after having the truck for a few hours, they said they “couldn’t replicate” any of the concerns but did notice “a little bit of harsh shifting” and the transmission had an update available, so they re-flashed it. “Ok I’ll give it a try.” After driving it some more, I’m pretty sure the “transmission update” was their way of sending me down the road without actually addressing what they thought to be a non-issue.

The truck currently now has less than 5,000 miles, and it’s making the noise in the attached video link. The reason I think this is torque converter related is because it only grinds in gears 4 and higher, when the torque converter is partially or fully locked. I can also feel and hear it shudder while unlocking coming to a stop. For the video, the only way I could think to capture the noise was with the transfer case in neutral and manually selecting the gears. It only starts grinding/clacking in gear 4+ when the throttle is depressed, let off, and then lightly depressed again at around 900-1200 rpms.

What do you guys think, is it worth trying a relearn or does this seem more mechanical than pressure related?

I have heard some harmonics come through transmissions over the years, heavy duty Allison 3000s down tnrough our dinky dodges. Especially when in lockup. Some just seem louder than others. It’s tough to make out on your video but it’s always a good idea to get it on record at the dealer 8n case something goes down.

Could be something with the flex plate… the dealers can be difficult. If you have any other dealer around i would try them instead. Or see if you can take their mechanic for a drive instead

Has anyone figured out this issue yet? I’ve been having it since I got my 2020 2500 6.7L in February… it’s annoying

How random, happened on the way to work today. It's a rare occurrence for me. Noticed it maybe a couple other times. First start up of the day, probably a mile from the house, slow speed, light throttle. But couldn't recreate it. I didn't consider it could be trans related. The sound and feeling seem like there was to much backlash in the rear axle gears. Not that that makes any sense but it's what came to mind. lol

@RamCares I have a 2019 ram 6.7 Cummins 68RFE tranny and I am having the same exact issue with the slight drivetrain grinding noise as well as a torque converter shudder around 45 mph. My truck has been at 4 different dealerships and they have all noticed the issue but with no codes ram won't do anything. Now the 4th dealer in Tennessee says if we didn't sell you the truck then we won't work on it. great dealers! @RamCares Maybe someone with ram will pony up and fix these problems by issuing a recall @RamCares won't really help either since all they do is try and calm you down. But since I've had 4 different cases open with them for the same issue I doubt it. since I haven't been able to drive the truck for 3 months maybe @RamCares should also pay the payments! I have also been told that after the transmission recall was preformed that they didn't update the software correctly on the transmission this maybe your same issue and has caused irreparable damage to the transmission / torque converter. maybe someone with @RamCares will help us fix this issue.

Ive emailed RAMCares here with a link to my youtube video. https://www.ramtrucks.com/webselfservice/ram/emailpage.html
ill keep yall posted on their response.
I guess they haven’t responded. I’m also getting the grinding sound when moving but under a no load situation. Customer Care sent me to a different dealer because my selling dealer wouldn’t perform recall and they couldn’t get them on the phone either. Haven’t talked to new dealer about it yet.

Hey all,

So…….RAMCare also recommended I take it to another dealership. I’m between their recommendation and actually taking the truck was having problems starting. So I thought, well at least now they have a legitimate issue they can give RAM to tear into my transmission and find the cause of the noise. RAMCare has given me a list of dealerships other than the dealership I purchased the truck from. So I waited for an appointment with the other dealership. The service advisor actually drove my truck with me in the passenger seat. He heard the noises coming from the transmission and acknowledged that it shouldn’t be doing that. So for a brief time I was just happy that I finally got a dealership to work with me on the noise from the transmission. About 10 days +/- later the service advisor called and told me that the starting issue was caused by a bad steering wheel position sensor and that two of their technicians could not replicate the transmission noise. So I called RAMCare to let them know what was said. RAMCare told me they would reach out to the dealership and try to get a better explanation on what was happening. The focus of my transmission problem has shifted to this “STEERING WHEEL POSITION SENSOR” problem. Matt from RAMCare has assured me that the dealership will reach out to a regional master technician to see about what to do about the transmission noise. But I’ve been without my tuck for the entire month of December without an ETA on the steering wheel position sensor part that was ordered in November. The worst part is, that RAMCare only does reimbursements for towing and car rental that can take up to 30 days. This I didn’t know. I guess the next truck I go with I’ll ask better question on how the warranty works. I’ll keep y’all posted.

Thank for the update. The dealer I’m working with now has put me on their list for the Y43 recall and I’m waiting for them to call when they have the parts and can schedule an appointment. I’m going to hit them up about the transmission at that time if it makes it that long.

What did you ever come up with on your transmission? I had a clunking noise rear its head after letting off the gas to coast then pushing the gas again. Started after my long trip pulling my camper. Dealership just did a relearn, We’ll see if that fixes it.

I haven’t done anything about it yet. I’ve just been driving it. No problems other than the noise and it only occurs when between accelerating or decelerating, free wheeling around 20-35 mph. I’ve been meaning to crawl under it and check to see if it is leaking TC fluid where the driveshaft goes in.
