Cummins SO w/ 68RFE - Built 5/22 - Less than 5k miles.
I’m thinking the below is torque converter related, but wanted to get some other thoughts and see if anyone on here has had a similar issue:
Torque Converter Noise Video
Backstory/ Observations:
I didn’t notice any noise when I bought the truck, but started hearing a drivetrain grinding noise develop at around 1200 miles. I first noticed it while cruising 55-60mph with very light throttle input; then I started to notice it driving around town at 30mph, again with light throttle (almost balancing the engine speed in between the drivetrain backlash if that makes sense.) It is more noticeable when going downhill, and with more mileage, it got to the point of almost matching the noise and feel of the exhaust brake being engaged, even though the exhaust brake was off.
I took it to the dealer at around 2100 miles with this concern, along with a few others, including the ticking/rattle noise at 1200+ rpms that a lot of other folks are reporting. The service writer seemed pretty dismissive about the concerns, and after having the truck for a few hours, they said they “couldn’t replicate” any of the concerns but did notice “a little bit of harsh shifting” and the transmission had an update available, so they re-flashed it. “Ok I’ll give it a try.” After driving it some more, I’m pretty sure the “transmission update” was their way of sending me down the road without actually addressing what they thought to be a non-issue.
The truck currently now has less than 5,000 miles, and it’s making the noise in the attached video link. The reason I think this is torque converter related is because it only grinds in gears 4 and higher, when the torque converter is partially or fully locked. I can also feel and hear it shudder while unlocking coming to a stop. For the video, the only way I could think to capture the noise was with the transfer case in neutral and manually selecting the gears. It only starts grinding/clacking in gear 4+ when the throttle is depressed, let off, and then lightly depressed again at around 900-1200 rpms.
What do you guys think, is it worth trying a relearn or does this seem more mechanical than pressure related?
