I have a stupid question but can't find the answer anywhere.

I've never owned a topper. One of the things that is nice about the newer Rams is the remote tailgate drop but with a topper do you have to open the top of the topper before the tailgate will drop? In most videos, it looks like people always open the topper first. This makes sense it would be the case but it is one reason why I could see my wife not liking the topper.

On most toppers, the rear door/hatch overlaps the tailgate. On those models, yes, you would have to open the hatch before lowering the tailgate.

On my backflip cover, I could drop the tailgate without raising the cover first.

Every hard topper that I've ever owned or seen has slightly overlapped the tailgate and would indeed require it to be opened prior to the tailgate.

Softopper and most tonneau covers do let you open/close tailgate independently.
