I have the facoty tri-fold tonneau. Works OK, frame is very heavy duty, but I want a toolbox with relatively easy access.

I've done some searching and have come up a bit empty:

  • I'd like a black low profile toolbox that does NOT extend to the bottom of the bed. I haul lumber and plywood on occasion and wouldn't want to lose the space all the way to the bed.
  • I'd like a relative leak-proof tonneau cover for the rest of the bed. The tonneau cover cannot have rails that narrow the width of the bed rails at all due to the tight clearance of the goosebox.
  • Lastly, I'm in the Northeast snow country; ability to support a snow load is important.

What I've found so far:
  • Tri/Quad fold covers work great, and generally have no rails. Works without a toolbox, but not with the box.
  • Retractile covers require a rail
  • Roll-up covers could work, assuming the can seal against the toolbox and support a snow load.
  • Youtube channel "Changin Lanes" had a good video and solution, but came back later and has had some clearance issues due to the rails.
BAKBOX 2 Tonneau Toolbox almost looks perfect... but it has rails!

Surely the folks here have found solutions to this 1st world problem!

I’ve been looking for the same thing As you have. Check out Big truck Big rv on YouTube. He runs a reese gb on his camper and uses a better built toolbox that has what’s called shotgun latches to be able to use a low profile toolbox with an access roll up tonneau cover. It has rails but he has never mentioned that it interfere with his goosebox. I’ll have to see if I can find the video and link it. It’s the setup I was looking at doing for my truck although I’m looking for a low profile deep toolbox.

I use a UWS 5th Wheel Tool Box (LINK) and a BAKFlip G2 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover (LINK). My toolbox is mounted right in front of the tailgate at the back of the bed for easy access. 5th wheel king pin clears it with ease--I'd imagine a GB hitch would, as well.

Still easy enough to haul lumber and plywood under the cover, but if I need full bed access, it can flip up against the cab with ease. I think BAKFlip makes a toolbox that goes with their covers, too--something called the BakBox.

I am looking for the same. What I am finding is that it is highly dependent upon pin box type/manufacturer, hitch height, and trailer manufacturer. Also terrain (ie if you never tight turn against a hill or dip you can get away with more. I currently am leaning towards three set ups: 1. Truck cover usa work cover ( I have an 8 foot bed, so should work, but uses rails and the tool box is not very large, in additionto being insanely expensive), truxedo box and any number of roll, fold, or retractables should work, again toolbox isn't the best. I like the Decked tool box, but again you'll most likely be stuck with a roll type. I also like the uws solutions, except like most under cover boxes takes top to bottom. So like most I am still in hunt mode.

I saw one set up where the guy went wall to wall tool box. Looked pretty cool, but not too practical if you needed your bed for anything else. Let us know how your search goes and will do the same.

If there are any other 5vrrs or pony pullers out the, always looking for the next best Idea.

I'll try to get some pics of my set up tomorrow. It wont help the OP because he still wants to be able to use the whole bed floor but it might work out for someone else.

I have an RDS Aluminum toolbox / aux fuel tank in the front of the bed that is rated to hold an extra 60 gal (I can only put about 55 gal in it on refill), I use the Mopar 30k fifth wheel hitch (which is just a rebranded Curt hitch) and a Truxedo Duece2 Tonneau cover. THe front of the cover folds back to access the toolbox/tank and it rolls up the full length to access the full bed.

The toolbox/tank comes up to the top of the bed rails so the cover covers the whole 8' bed. The rails for the cover stay tight to the bed sides and only stick up about an inch higher than the bed rails.
