Actually had an easier time at the tag office than I expected when I came across an issue/error. Thought I’d share
We register our vehicles yearly, on our birthdays here in Georgia. I live in a metro county that has emissions but all of my vehicles qualify as exempt. Older than 25 years, over 8500gvwr, less than 3 years old or diesel are the qualifications to exempt.
I get my registration in the mail and log on to renew online. It says error: no emissions record on file. (They submit electronically when you smog) so I figure out that my ram is throwing the error. It’s now over three years old and the system wants smog for it. But it’s over 8500gvwr so it should be exempt.
I look at my old registration and the GVWR says 0. I’d noticed that before but just assumed that’s how they handled exempt vehicles. But, now I’m thinking that’s my problem. I look at my dealer paperwork they send off to the state for tags and they’d left the GVWR spot blank. Well, now we know how the problem started.
Here I start to worry. It’s after closing time but I know the blank stares I’m regularly greeted with at the tag office when I have anything out of the ordinary such as a historical plate application, trailer tag, etc. I know the lady won’t have a clue about GVWR and she’s not going to understand it can’t be 0 and she’s not gonna be able to fix it and so on. She’s going to tell me it’s automatically in the system and it is what it is and etc.
Well, I call first thing in the morning and tell the guy hey it’s asking for emissions but my truck is over 8500. He says “what’s the GVWR?” I tell him it’s “10,000” he says “even?” “Yea, 10,000 even” Types it in the box and saves it. Done. That’s all it took.
I asked him what was wrong he said it was blank and now it’s fixed.
Renewed online in about 30 seconds after that.
Also dreaded renewing my drivers license this year (8yr exp) but I was able to do that online as well. Only problem is I’m going to be 45 when it expires and my picture will be from when I was 29. Oh well.
Moral of the story: don’t worry so much! Haha.
