Somethings keep a guy up at night. Like just the other day I saw fat free half and half in the grocery store.... Other things are the delta between AIT(air intake temp) and Ambient. I have a banks guage in my truck. One if my gauges is displaying AIT. I've noticed in most conditions it is 9-10F above ambient. At a stoplight it might get up to 12-14F on a hot day. After many a sleepless night....I have came up with a possible solution.

Step 1: Tape up the gap over the radiator between air intake and radiator shroud.

I used foil tape, you can probably use anything you like.

Step 2: Remove top row of grill shutters

They are surprisingly easy to remove.

Results: 5F decrease in AIT delta. I tested at 30-70mph and it was right in the 4-5F AIT delta. Stopped at gas station and it went up to 9F delta when idling.

I'm not ready to call it a success just yet, but it feels very promising.

PS: My truck has a HEMI, but I see no reason why a Cummins wouldn't also benefit from some cool air.

I guess if you want even worse fuel economy than we already get with the Hemi, then that is a good “mod” for you. I had a previous truck that I purchased used that someone did the active shutter “delete”, put a cooler thermostat in, a larger electric fan, and removed the mechanical fan… needless to say, after spending some money and time getting it back to stock my fuel economy went up drastically and I actually got some heat out of the vents in the winter…

An electric fan is a great idea! hahah j/k

I totally agree removing all the shutters would be too far. They are covered in bugs, so they obviously are closed a lot. I think it's worth a trade off in aero to get 5F decrease in AIT.

Cummins does not need those “mods” with the air to air cooler

The best “mod” would be put the AIT sensor in the lower part of the air box not in the intake tube where it will get heat from the engine

I assume the AIT comes from the MAP sensor, which can't be moved, it needs to be where it is for air flow.

The hemi has a MAP sensor? I would assume it only had a MAF sensor sense its N/A unlike the cummins with a turbo

You're right it would be a MAF

OP, have you seen any ill effects from this. Anything to like of the member who said he had better performance stock? Give us some updates.

So far no Ill effects. I only have about 300 miles of mostly city driving, but it sure is nice to see cooler AIT temps.

Honestly tempted to do this on my cummins too, at-least the tape/looking at optimizing airflow into the scoop. Yea we have an air to air charger, but when its this damn hot anything that can drop even 5 degrees is worth it. This is the sort of weather where the truck likes to command WAY more EGR which we all know ain't great. Pic was doing 65mph steady state down a farm road - You can tell the flaps are full open since the ECT is right at 190 and the tranny is nice and cool. When my flaps are closed in the heat the ECT is usually 195-205 and the tranny will hit 170 empty - as soon as the flaps open they both cool back down.

When its cooler with better air density (60s - 70s, even low 80s sometimes) the truck will only command like 5-10% EGR. It also GUZZLES DEF in this heat.
