The 3rd gens had a problem with the tailgate launching if you were hitting bumps hard offroad. I have seen more than one tailgate ruined. The solution was to add a bed stiffener in the rear corners of the bed, or add a ratchet strap from rear bed pocket to rear bed pocket to keep the bed from flexing, or just remove the tailgate. Do the new locking tailgates help prevent the flyaways? Maybe the newer trucks have stiffer bedsides. I doubt the locking mechanism will make a difference but I don't want to test it.

I asked the question on a FB group and it was mentioned the 4th gens may have a stiffer bed and may not have the issue with losing the tailgate. I can't remember if I have seen a 4th gen lose one or not. Do the 4.5 gens and the 4th gens have the same bed? I know the tailgates are different.

Guess I would just remove the tailgate?

Kinda noob here as I don't to off-road my truck but sounds easier. If storage is an issue maybe a custom cross bar or tie down system?
