Am I the Jerk?
Towing a 23,000 # trailer and this 22 Diesel HD tranny has been quite rough to shift from 1st to 2nd and a bit rough 1nd to 3rd. Without load it shifts smoothly enough.

Took it in for the fire recall today and had them check for updates. Apparently there is a shifting update 18-19-05-RT ...I look forward to seeing if it shifts more smoothly.

Anything similar or did I miss a posting on this?

Thx

I assume your is an HO with Aisin?
How long have you had you truck for?
I remember my Aisin took a while to learn to become smooth but I never towed anywhere near as heavy as your trailer.

Also if your 22 is an HO you should take it in for a snap ring recall in the transmission before it blows

6 K miles yes Aisin. Looks like they reset the "learning" and I'll plan to report back if it is smoother now.

Unless I missed something recently there is no recall on the 22 snap ring failure issue. There is a TSB published and it’s becoming a more common failure for mid to late year 22s but as far as I am aware a recall has not been issued.

So op wouldn’t be able to take it in and have The snap ring replaced until it fails.

My AISIN has always had firm shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third as the torque converter locks. i wouldnt call it jerky but definitely firm.

I have also noticed if I drive unloaded for a long time, then tow, the shifts will be less smooth after I unhook the trailer. The AISIN is constantly learn and adapting to driving style so I have always just chalked it up to that.

You're right, it is a TSB and not a recall however you do not need to wait until it fails. I don't want to get into argument about it, I frankly don't care as it doesn't apply to my MY, I only provide what info I read on some Cummins groups on Facebook. Up to you to check the validity of this claim with your local dealer.

Thanks folks. Will put some weight on it soon and see. I will ask the advisor to look up that snap ring.

Not looking for an argument either, just sharing the information I have learned and always happy to be corrected if i'm wrong.

Based on what you are reading on other forums, are '22 owners going in and having the snap ring replaced preemptively? And if so, are they paying out of pocket or is it covered under warranty?

I have a 21 HO Aisin and mine never shifts hashly when driving normal. The only time it will do a harsh shift is if I do something weird with the throttle like ease up real fast but not go all the way closed. I am at 60K miles 90% towing 10,000 pounds.
I did have an interesing experience resently. I had changed the Trans fluid and the filter. I am guessing there is a foot valve in the filter because a LOT more fluid came out when I disloged the filter dispite draing over night. Anyhow when I started the truck it set a code and went into limp mode. It was a low transmission pressure code. Likely took a few seconds for the pump to generate pressure. But the thing went to full pressure when it went into limp mode and oh my gosh did it bang when going into gear. Same with reverse. And it did not stop doing it until I cycled the ignition. I coded it and reset it and cycled the ignition and all back to normal. I kind of wonder if I had drove it in limp mode how it would have shifted. Probably would have broke something it was that harsh.
