The automatic power side step on my 2022 Ram Limited fell off the truck. The truck was still under the warranty so I took the truck to an official Ram Dealer. The service writer told me the running board bracket would not just fail and drop the running board. The service writer further stated that I must have hit something and for me to call my insurance company. I called the insurance company and when the adjuster inspected the vehicle, he found zero evidence of an external force on the running board components. There is absolutely no evidence of a collision. I removed the power steps and replaced them fixed nerf style running boards. We like the new running boards.
The problem is that the computer "thinks" the old steps are not working and I keep getting a gong and dash warnings that the "automatic power steps require service". I took the truck back to the dealer to have them use Witech to remove the feature from the sales code so that I no longer get the warnings, at my expense. The dealer service writer says that there is no technician at the dealership with the experience to perform that task.
I called the "mopar cares" phone number that I found in my owner's documents for the location of a dealer with a "senior technician. The "mopar cares" agent only starts looking in his directory of Ram Service Centers on a list sorted by miles from my zip code. The agent has no idea if there is a qualified tech at the locations he offers. I call the service centers and explain the problem to the service rep only to be told they will look into it and call me back. I never get a call back, not even to say "sorry, we can not help".
I have the original auto power steps and preserved them with no evidence of an external power source (collision) for inspection by a mechanical engineer, however, the insurance company paid for the new steps and compensation for one hour of labor to have a senior tech remove the codes that cause the warnings. I just need the location of a Ram Service Center that has a qualified tech.
Be aware that if you remove the factory installed running boards, you may run into computer problems. I put the running boards in the photo onto my truck. I like them. They cost $250.00 new and it took less than an hour to swap them but I have yet to find a service center that has a tech that knows how to use WiTech to tell the computer on my truck that the power steps no not require service, they have been removed. I still get warning gongs and messages on my dash.
RamCares responded to the above message and told me to call dealers until I find one that can fix it but RamCares did not offer any guidance on how to find a service center that has a senior tech. I am left with the daunting task of called every dealer I can find....and not having luck.
