Though my understanding is that the additional fuel used with a DEF based system is much less that the old 7th injection method.

Not really as the DEF system has no part in the Regen cycle other than to cool the exhaust gasses in the SCR (behind the DPF) It needs to “burn” extra fuel and run hot to clean the DPF out (its actually injecting the fuel during the Exhaust stroke to clean the DPF not actually burning it)
