Rearview Mirror Camera Display and Trailer Camera System

While a cool feature, I am currently torn between custom ordering a new 2020 Ram 3500 Limited or a 2021 Ram 3500 Limited, as really there are few new options (this rear view mirror with the camera display, new fuel pump) that make up for the $2500 difference. The one thing that would make this mirror worth it is if, with the trailer wiring harness installed, this rear view mirror would display the trailer camera rather than the truck bed camera. Would be a simple software addition it would seem with an interface presumably already existing for the trailer camera and the camera's displayed on the digital monitor in the rearview mirror, but I have found UConnect to be lacking in many areas with their software (my biggest pet-peeve, the super simplistic, usually in other lower price sedans, to auto-lock the doors when the vehicle is off and no one is in the seat - ie, parked).

Does anyone know if this rearview mirror with the trailer camera package displays the trailer camera when connected? It only makes sense, and it wouldn't make sense to display the truck bed, but like I said, that means nothing now days!

As a software engineer, I also tend to be more critical of software systems, so I'm sorry, this is not a dig at UConnect specifically, just options that appear to be lacking. If only I could find the API for the UConnect systems ...

The digital rearview mirror camera gets a hardwire feed directly from the camera in the CHMSL. There's a software hook with the UConnect as evidence by the troubles 2020 1500 owners are having getting it working (Jimmy07 is involved) so I don't think there's any way to get the AUX camera feeds to the mirror short of replacing the physical connection (running a cable AUX Cam--> mirror). Someone could potentially womp up a switcher.

That makes sense if there is no simple switch within the routing. It's also a terrible oversight, as this would make such a system incredibly more valuable to have the camera feed from the trailer post directly to the digital rearview mirror - doesn't do me much good to have a view of the bed of a truck when there is a trailer behind. Sadly, these oversights are the things that tend to drive me insane about the UConnect system.

With that being my simple rant, and moving onto the conversation, it doesn't appear either the digital mirror or the trailer wiring package add a whole lot of value. Either way, one is going to need to get in and modify the systems hardware to make this work (as you stated) optimally.

You may find it helpful to review the (one is LONG) threads regarding an always on camera solution with the NAViKS unit.

One was exploratory, the other an install thread. Please ask questions in the exploratory (longer) thread.
