So I just recently purchased a 2020 Ram 2500 6.7 cummins and there have been a few times where when I park and turn off the truck I can smell like If plastic was burning inside the trucks engine bay also when this happens I can hear a low whistle sound only when it’s in the Drive gear… I own various diesel trucks like the 7.3 Ford f250’s, and 6.0 power strokes. It just concerns me because I have never experienced this with any diesels I own or is it just a new system that these new trucks have?

The burnt smell is a regen that was going when you shut your truck off . Check your DPF status on the info screen between the gauges . If it is in a regen it will say so

Smell is likely regen if it's not a deleted truck.

Did you buy it from a dealer?

I would expect it's not deleted and all updates to have been applied, but if private party, perhaps not.

Low whistle only in drive escapes me unless it's just turbo noise. Does it have an aftermarket CAI?

A lot of our trucks have a mouse squeak in the front due to idler or pulley/belt noise the dealers and STAR can't seem to figure out, but you would hear that at idle in park.

Yeah it’s not a deleted truck and yeah I bought from a dealer… yeah the whistle is really low pitch yo can barely hear it, and it stops only when I park the truck, it could be the turbo perhaps.

The truck has nothing aftermarket, and I am thinking on deleting the truck but probably after the dealer warranty expires.

The dealer said it has a recall for engine calibration, so mostly likely they will be making some updates to it

The 7.3 and 6.0 did not have the exhaust systems these new trucks have. Like others have stated, you're most likely smelling the "regen".

On my Ford 6.7 I used the EDGE CTS3 and would just keep driving (if I could) to complete the process, especially if I was just driving short distances consistently.

mine smells like that due to a regen. Took me a few regens to figure out that was what it was. Looked around the truck for stickers/labels that might be burning off of exhaust pipes the first time lol.

As the the whistle, it's most likely turbo noise. These trucks can sound different while idling than others. Start it up in the cold and let the high idle kick in for warm up. you'll know when it's warmed up cause the idle will change.

Yeah I was concerned about the smell, but as I was driving today I took a look at the DPF screen and it showed the regen message, now I’m more relieved about this lol

This is my first diesel truck with all this emissions bs the gov’t wants to put in these new diesels. So this is all new to me lol but not for long cuz’ I’ll be deleting the truck here pretty soon

Like others have said regen. I have a 21 and can hear when the truck starts a regen (verified on the cluster) with the bit of extra turbo noise at low rpm/idle.

Yeah that’s what I have noticed, now that the regen is complete the noise went away. Thanks for the info!
